As a teenager, Ming fought valiantly to escape one of history’s darkest eras—China’s Cultural Revolution—during which millions of innocent youth were deported to remote areas to face a life sentence of poverty and hard labor. Through his own tenacity and his parents’ tireless efforts to provide a chance of freedom for their son, Ming eventually made his way to America with $50 in his pocket and an American dream in his heart. Against all odds, he would earn a PhD in laser physics and graduate magna cum laude with the highest honors from Harvard Medical School and MIT. He embraced his Christian faith and tackled one of the most important questions of our time—Are faith and science friends or foes?—which led to his invention of a breakthrough biotechnology to restore…

CARMINA BURANA THROUGH JUNE 3 The Nashville Symphony puts a modern twist on an audience favorite. The Nashville Symphony will perform Carmina Burana May 31to June 3 at Schermerhorn Symphony Center. Based on the 1930 musical work by Carl Orff, the Symphony puts a modern twist on a traditional piece. “This will be a very different experience of Carmina Burana because of the elements we’re drawing together. We wanted to find a new way to breathe fresh life into this standard and popular work,” says Nashville Symphony COO Steven Brosvik. Combining elements of music, dance, and film, the Symphony collaborated with the Nashville Ballet and London filmmaker Duncan Copp. These partnerships combine each artistic component perfectly, creating an unforgettable experience for audience members. “We have all of these different elements we’re bringing together,” says…

a celebration for equality

Nashville Pride Festival will return to Public Square Park June 22 and 23. This year’s event will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Stonewall, a 1969 protest led by LGBTQ community members that ignited the modern-day movement for equality. In honor of the historic event, the Festival has announced The Nashville Pride Parade. Kicking off the Festival on June 22, the parade will march down Broadway at 10 a.m. with 100 floats, vehicles, bands, and walkers. The Festival also announced its updated donor program, Friends of Nashville Pride. Supporters can contribute $10 or $25 every month in exchange for exclusive Festival access and discounted tickets. kassi ashton

Kassi Ashton is a creative. While she’s most famously known for her music career with soul-searing songs like “California, Missouri” and “Violins,” the Midwestern beauty is more than just a pretty voice. Ashton has been designing her own clothes, dancing, and expressing herself through art since she was a little girl growing up in small-town Missouri. (For her recent “Violins” video, Ashton not only designed and made her own wardrobe, she choreographed the dance routines.) And now, as her music career is really taking off (she’ll hit the road on Maren Morris’s GIRL: The World Tour later this summer), she’s showing the world all that she can do. Now the Belmont grad is dishing on what it’s like to make your own way in country music—and how to be an…
