from darkness to sight

As a teenager, Ming fought valiantly to escape one of history’s darkest eras — China’s Cultural Revolution — during which millions of innocent youth were deported to remote areas to face a life sentence of poverty and hard labor. He eventually made his way to the U.S. with $50 in his pocket, where against all odds, he later earned a PhD in laser physics and graduated with the highest honors from Harvard Medical School and MIT. To date, Dr. Wang has performed over 55,000 eye procedures including on over 4,000 physicians. He has published 9 textbooks, holds several U.S. patents, and performed the world’s first laser artificial cornea implantation. Dr. Wang is currently the only surgeon in the state who performs 3D SMILE and 3D LASIK (18+), 3D Implantable Contact Lens…

Twenty years ago we launched this magazine, Nashville Lifestyles. I am honored to say I was among the very first employees. I sold the first ad for the magazine, did the first photoshoot at a home in Green Hills with the late Landy Gardner, even wrote a food review, and attended the first party (of many, many to follow). I am proud to say this month is our Platinum anniversary. Now, a great deal has changed in two decades, and the city has seen incredible growth. Twenty years ago Broadway was kind of “sketchy,” for lack of a better word; bachelorettes were not common; there were no scooters…heck, Taylor Swift was in grade school. It feels like a million years ago and yesterday all at once. I remember sitting in a meeting…

behind the scenes

It was a beautiful week to hang out at Robby Klein’s East Nashville studio and capture the essence of our 2019 Most Beautiful People. From spending time with these truly gorgeous (inside and out) humans, to trying on the baubles from Grogan Jewelers by Lon, to watching the celebrity photographer at work—and even getting in on the action ourselves (check out the fun pic of NL team members Alison Abbey, Brian Barry, Heather Hauser, and Kendall Swanson above)—it was a great way to kick off our 20th year. See the finished product and read all about these amazing folks in our feature on page 86.…

A night honoring history and legacy awaits guests as the Andrew Jackson Foundation hosts its annual Hermitage Gala on October 18, at the Omni Nashville Hotel. Co-chaired by Kim Holbrook and Robin Puryear, the gala will benefit the Andrew Jackson Foundation’s education programs and preservation projects. Pulitzer Prize winner and New York Times bestselling author Rick Atkinson will deliver the keynote address. Additionally, the Lewis R. Donelson Award and the Jackson Award will be presented to leaders who have brought honor and recognition to historical legacies, and who have enriched the community through their work.
