What are you doing this summer? Are you traveling? Are you hosting a pool party? I miss a pool party! (Truthfully, I miss having a tan and floating on a raft with a margarita.) Here we are, more than a year later when we can be safe, free, and vaccinated. What will you do? I want to do it all! I feel like I took all of that for granted. When I think about it, I really did not appreciate all the things that Nashville has to offer. Sure, I know Music City is a huge tourist attraction with more live music of quality than probably anywhere in the world. But my hometown is so much, much more. Hot town, summer in the city… After last year’s extremely quiet summer it sure feels like old times in Music City once again! Events are coming back (hello, Steeplechase!), Broadway is bustling (then again—was it ever not?), and the line for the wings mural in the Gulch is a solid five blocks long. Things are starting to feel normal again and I am cautiously optimistic that we are back, baby! I’ve been enjoying dining on some of Nashville’s best patios and getting back to my old favorite stores—and shopping some new ones. I’m masked and vaxxed and ready to take this summer by storm. Within the animal welfare community and beyond, Phran Galante was a driving force for change. Through her tireless efforts, Galante was a pioneer in the animal welfare community, and devoted her life not only to saving animals’ lives, but to fighting for change to better Nashville at large. Recognized as a humanitarian, philanthropist, and community pillar, she also devoted much of her time to supporting the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, raising money to better the lives of countless children. With a background and passion for theatre, she was an avid supporter of the Tennessee Performing Arts center (TPAC), as well. Summer in Music City looks quite different this year compared to the summer of 2020. With events back on the calendar, we’re all eager to make up for a year of cancelations and postponements. Perhaps one of the most exciting returns is the Iroquois Steeplechase. To the delight of many, the iconic annual sporting and social event will make its highly anticipated return to Percy Warner Park on Saturday, June 26. As a Nashville rite of spring since 1941, the Iroquois Steeplechase is traditionally held the second Saturday of each May, and although this year’s June date may be different, the excitement remains just as (if not more) intense.
