a place to be

In what room do you spend most of your waking hours at home? Growing up, our family of six lived primarily in the den. Down the hall was a formal living room that was rarely used, except for receiving guests we didn’t know well, practicing the piano, and decorating the Christmas tree. Its gilded 1970s version of Louis XV furniture—a couch and two chairs— were barely sat in and remained from the early ’70s until we sold the house this year. The furniture in the den was the opposite—wellworn and replaced every few years because my entire family spent evenings and weekends lounging on the couch and easy chairs, with Chester the dog trying to squeeze in wherever possible. In those days, we shared mainly the same activities: watching television…

No parent sets out to create a stereotypical nursery they’ll need to redo in a few years. With retail sameness and decision fatigue, it happens—but less so in Dallas, where moms have Madre. Housed in a beach bungalow, its coral door hints at the bright ideas inside. “Every item has personality,” says Louise Marsh, who opened the shop in 2015 with fellow design-lovers Mia Brous and Kerri Goldfarb. They stock a mix that includes printed bedding, custom headboards and lampshades, and original art. Madre’s owners have honed an acute ability to help customers make efficient decisions, both big (decorating a room to evolve) and small (choosing a standout shower gift). “We also wrap and deliver, do rush monograms, and can customize just about anything,” Louise says. We’re sold. madredallas.com INSIDER GUIDE Madre’s…

WASH-AND-WEAR HAIR Ready to take a vacay from your blow-dryer or iron? Find the right styler for your natural texture, and you can skip the heat. FOR SHINY, DEFINED CURLS, it’s all about the mousse, says Mark Townsend, a Dove celebrity hair stylist. “Unlike the crunchy mousses of the past, today’s formulas smooth and define like a lotion.” (Try Dove Style+Care Curl Defining Mousse, $3.99; drugstores.) Rake a generous dollop through damp hair and let air-dry. TO BOOST FINE, STRAIGHT HAIR, start with air-dried or second-day hair. Mist a large paddle brush with dry shampoo, and brush from your roots to your ends. “The starches in the dry shampoo soak up any oil and immediately add lift to the hair,” Townsend says. DRY SHAMPOO IS SO VERSATILE. USE IT TO REFRESH OILY ROOTS OR ADD BODY TO CLEAN HAIR. BRAID BAR Three grown-up ideas for plaiting your hair. ACCENT BRAID Use a touch of pomade to smooth strays, then secure with a tiny elastic. MESSY FRENCH BRAID Start with dry shampoo (the grit improves hold). As a final touch, gently pull apart the braid just enough to loosen it. SIDE BRAID Start at your nape so it’s easy to pull to one side. For a romantic touch, knot a velvet ribbon at the end.
