summer school

For me, the first day of summer has always had a little bit of regret attached to it. The season launches with the solstice—June 20, 21, or 22 in the Northern Hemisphere—the longest day of the year. (Sorry to be a bummer just when you’re finally able to go to the beach.) But I recently learned something that made me feel better: These dates reflect only the astronomical definition of the seasons. Meteorologists divide the year into different three-month periods. HOW DOES IT WORK? “Highlighter reflects light, so it adds shine and volume wherever you place it,” says celebrity makeup artist Andrew Sotomayor. He recommends using a neutral shade (one matching your foundation or bronzer) if you want to accent the high points of your face—specifically, the cheekbones, brow bones, inner-eye corners, and Cupid’s bow. Rose, peach, or berry highlighters that resemble blush look best on cheeks. HOW DO I WEAR IT? You can apply highlighter after your blush or bronzer as a finishing touch or in lieu of either one to make foundation look fresher, Sotomayor says.
