old ways work

I plagiarized the title. It’s the catchphrase of the late, great Capt. R.D. “Pete” Culler, boatbuilder, mariner, and author of several notable books and innumerable magazine articles. It’s not just that Cap’n Pete would describe how to use tallow as a lubricant, or mix linseed oil and kerosene as a wood sealer, or use roofing tar instead of the goop featuring a picture of an anchor on its package, but he’d tell you why these things were as good or better than store-bought products for a given application. At a superficial glance, the jaded might call Culler a Luddite or a cheapskate. Discerning reading makes it clear that Culler’s concoctions, like his opinions on building and running boats, were born from decades in the doing. I was reminded of Culler while…

ON BOARD WITH… BOATINGMAG.COM NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2019 Lauren B. Icom Cover Girl of 2019 Having grown up in Orlando, Florida, Lauren has spent her life boating with friends and family around the local lakes. She worked for six years as a dancer for the NBA’s Orlando Magic before settling into an office job. Now she’s our Icom Cover Girl of 2019. So, you grew up around the water? A lot of my friends in high school had boats, and we’d go out a lot and go wakeboarding or tubing and cruise around the Butler Chain of Lakes (in Orlando, Florida). How’d you get involved in our cover shoot? I don’t consider myself a model, but my old talent agency from my dancing days called me out of the blue, and I agreed to do it, and it was…

1. You want to cover your boat for the winter. What is the best way to do it? A. Buy a shrink-wrap kit, including heat gun and propane tank/hose, and do it yourself. B. Pay a professional to shrink-wrap your boat, paying close attention to support and vents. C. Buy a large tarp from a discount store, make a support for underneath, and cover the boat with the tarp, securing it with bungee cords. D. None of the above 2. What should you do to keep your boat’s plumbing (sink, toilet, washdown systems, etc.) free from water that can freeze and crack hoses and fittings? A. Follow the boat manufacturer’s plumbing schematic and disconnect hoses and fittings to drain off any water present. Run pink RV/Marine (propylene glycol) antifreeze through all systems, and ensure it comes…

calling all future boating writers

Is there a young journalism student in your life who’s pining to one day write about boats and the boating lifestyle? Trust us, it’s a great gig. Boating Writers International (BWI), an industry group comprised of prominent boating journalists, is offering a scholarship to aspiring students. From BWI: The BWI Scholarship Fund was created to honor undergraduate college students—from any major—who demonstrate a passion for the field of boating media and have a clear career goal to pursue this field. “We are excited about this program and what it can mean to the future of boating journalism,” BWI President Alan Jones says. “Our industry needs effective communicators who can share their passion for boats and the boating lifestyle. This is a first step in what we believe will be a growing effort…
