what new boaters need

It’s tough to replace the experience of running a boat, with respect to seamanship and safety. And if someone comes from a culture of boating—that is, they grew up in a boating household or boated for many years in the company of friends—that too counts as an advantage in Falvey’s book of what makes a good boater. It needs to be remembered, though, that there are few natural boaters. It takes time and experience, and the exposure to other knowledgeable and considerate boaters ramps up the learning curve considerably. If a phenom exists in boating, I’ve yet to meet her or him. ON BOARD WITH… CAPTAIN’S TEST BY THE NUMBERS FOR COMPARISON’S SAKE ONLINE THIS MONTH FIRST IMPRESSION GEAR HEAD The day after BRP announced in June that it would stop building Evinrude outboards, we discovered Charlie Luedeke while searching for a water-pump impeller for a 1956 Evinrude Lark. A certified master technician with more than 45 years’ experience, Luedeke opened Marine Tech in 1986 as an Evinrude-authorized service center in New London, Wisconsin. He has since acquired the new original stock (NOS) parts inventory of more than 30 Evinrude or Johnson outboard dealerships, which he estimates is worth more than $2 million. Why did you start buying up parts? It was always cheaper to buy NOS parts at an auction or sale than getting them from OMC or BRP. Some dealerships close up, but…

Nothing’s wrong with ethanol fuel; today’s fuels are clean enough and won’t go stale.B. There’s nothing wrong with actually using it; letting it sit in fuel lines, injectors or carburetors where it can phase-separate and leave corrosive deposits is the problem. Treat the fuel with fuel conditioner, and be sure to run the outboard long enough to get that treated fuel into the engine.C. Run all the fuel out of the engine by disconnecting the fuel line and letting the engine run out of fuel.D. The best bet is to run Rec-90 (non-ethanol) fuel, if it’s available.E. B and D 2.…
