GOING DOWN It’s rare when we get to report about dropping prices for marine accessories. Nonetheless, that’s exactly the news we bring you from Evinrude. Check out Jim Hendricks’ full report in Motorhead on page 68. Ostensibly designed to ensure cleaner air, the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) ends up creating pollution, makes food cost more, and all the while provides pork for corn growers and ethanol distillers. That the RFS puts marine engines at risk is the point I really want to drive home. Implementing RFS provisions, the federal Environmental Protection Agency sets the limits for the percentages of ethanol in fuel, which resulted in the now ubiquitous E10 blend of gasoline mixed with 10 percent ethanol. Problems, including destroyed engines and ruined boat-fuel systems, did occur when E10 first hit the market.…

jeff dorhauer, fire chief, osage beach, missouri

SCAN ME To read the full interview online, scan this tag or go to boatingmag.com/firechief. Is it true that women go for firemen? My wife does. We were just married when I started on the volunteer department. We’re still here with our kids. What’s a typical day on the fireboat? Well, we use it more to transport boating-accident victims to land-based ambulances. What are the most common injuries? Back injuries in bowriders are pretty common. People hit wakes too hard. What causes most injury accidents around here? Alcohol, speed, and poor visibility at night. If you don’t really know this lake, you shouldn’t be navigating it at night — and definitely not on plane. What was your most rewarding moment on the rescue boat? Well, when we are on the rescue boat, it’s never a good day … Do you have a…

skratch labs exercise hydration mix

WE TEST STUFF When you spend the day under a blazing sun, whether wakeboarding, riding a PWC, or just chilling at the sandbar, you’re probably going to sweat. For many boaters, replacing those fluids means reaching for a sports drink, but if you’re anything like me, syrupy drinks get old. Turns out, they can also make your stomach feel lousy. According to sports physiologist Dr. Allen Lim, the reason is that many of these “sports” drinks are chock full of sugar, artificial flavors and colors, vitamins and preservatives. Lim’s alternative is a line of all-natural hydration mixes from his company Skratch Labs. Originally developed from working with professional cycling teams, Skratch Labs Exercise Hydration Mix features less sugar than the norm, more sodium (in the form of sodium citrate) to replace all…

boat launch gone wrong

Raising a family, working, paying a mortgage and the usual all left me a surf fisherman into my 40s. Finally, a charter-boat-captain friend recommended a used 16-foot Starcraft with a 30 hp engine and a trailer for a price that even my wife said I couldn’t refuse. I was so excited and couldn’t wait to take it out. So, on a beautiful, sunny July afternoon, I towed the rig to our local boat ramp. With the usual weekend crowd relaxing on the pier benches, I manfully took a good 10 minutes to back it down, using most of the two ramp lanes. Undeterred, I made ready to launch when a much more experienced skipper pulled his boat up for retrieval and nicely asked if I would move my boat trailer over…
