Although my first deer hunt was a few years off, I became enamored with the hunt in the late 1970s. The best day of the year was the Sunday after Thanksgiving. That’s when my dad and brothers returned from deer camp. Dad would always pull into the driveway with his truck loaded with hunting clothes, a freshly cut Christmas tree, and one, or sometimes two, frozen deer carcasses. The defining moment of my early deer hunting education came one year when they returned with an 8-point buck. Well, we called it an 8-pointer, but it was something more like a 5½ -pointer, because it had several tines broken from fighting. That was the beauty of deer hunting back then. Nobody ever thought about putting a tape measure to the antlers of a…

Dear Dan, The list of “unsuccessful” strategies to address chronic wasting disease provided (Browse, June 2019 issue) does not mean that all of those strategies would be failures if successfully implemented. Back in 2002, there were five main strategies that were felt to be necessary if we were to contain/control CWD in Wisconsin: a statewide bait-feed ban, herd reduction, stopping the movement of deer (live and dead) from known infected areas, close captive cervid industry, and fund research and monitoring. As you know, all of these were politically obstructed before their effectiveness could be shown. Then came a new administration with its consultant “Dr. Deer” and his “let it run its course” mantra and a resulting eight-year period of ignoring CWD while it spread and prevalence increased. All this made Wisconsin a…

DEER OF THE MONTH Justin Vernon lives in Illinois and it’s tough for him to get home to Virginia for deer hunting. But he was able to capitalize on his visit this past fall when he harvested this gorgeous 8-pointer on Nov. 6, 2018, with his .50 caliber Thompson/Center at 20 yards. Congratulations, Justin! Sportsmen across the country remain concerned about the possibility that chronic wasting disease might someday spread from the deer they consume to humans. But that does not appear to be a possibility at this time, according to Brent Race, a researcher at Rocky Mountain Laboratories, a federally funded infectious disease research center where he has studied the disease for decades. Since first being discovered in Colorado mule deer research facilities in 1967, CWD has generated much angst among deer hunters, primarily because of Mad Cow Disease and Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, both of which have been discovered in humans. Another prion disease, scrapie, which has been found in sheep, has been in existence for centuries, but has never been transmitted to humans, helps assuage the acute concern. However, the proliferation of unsubstantiated press…

I’ve been doing this for a long time. I have hunted deer longer than some, though I’m by no means an old-timer. Just ask me. I have friends who have been at this decades longer than I have. I’ve never claimed to be an expert. Deer hunting is too much fun and I don’t want to ruin it with the pressure of having to exhibit expertise. I do, however, think I’ve earned the rank of veteran, at least. I’ve been chasing deer for the better part of 30 years, so this is not a new experience for me. Don’t call me jaded though. I’m not. Since that first hunt in 1987, there is not much in life that excites me like the night before the opening day of gun season…
