the problem with trespassers

I’m normally an even-headed dude when it comes to deer hunting and property boundaries. Hunters seem to be pushed onto smaller and smaller properties every year, and conflicts usually arise. From my perspective, you will always attract more flies with honey than hostility, and a Christian attitude will soothe over problems (with all aspects of our of lives) and bring peace and perspective to almost any situation. But what’s a guy to do when he catches someone blatantly trespassing on a property, especially during hunting season? It’s super easy to get angry, aggressive and maybe even escalate a situation to the point of confrontation. Take, for example, this Cuddeback photo I captured recently of an alleged turkey hunter (although he’s not carrying a gun or bow) trespassing on a property we…

goodbye, mr. roberts

Clyde Roberts of Virginia hunted for 40 years. That might not sound like much, but he started when he was 65 years old. On Sept. 10, 2019, Roberts passed away at 105 years old. He was the oldest deer hunter in North America. We first reported on Mr. Roberts’ deer hunting exploits back in 2015. Then, at age 102, he was still climbing 20-foot ladders to he could hunt his favorite stand in Bedford County. His attitude for life is one for everyone to treasure. “When people ask me about the secret to my longevity, I tell them it was all about hard work and living for the Lord,” he once said. After we posted the news on Facebook, nearly 7,000 D&DH fans checked in with their thoughts. Here is just a sample…

buck with an overbite

Like every species, whitetail deer are sometimes born with deformities. Some people think abnormal deer are more beautiful, as in cases of albinos and piebalds. Other times, the abnormality is not very pretty. A few years back I shot a buck with a significant defect. He was on a fast walk to a thick patch of blackberry brush. My first glance told me his antlers easily qualified him as a shooter under Pennsylvania’s antler restriction law. I had no time at all to make any further assessment. My crosshairs settled high on his shoulder, and the bullet put him down instantly. After covering the 60 yards to where he lay, I was positioning him to take photos before field dressing and noticed what appeared to be an injury to his jaw. My…
