It is with great joy and excitement that we officially report this news: A group led by longtime employees and contributors has purchased Deer & Deer Hunting from F+W Media, Inc. of New York City. The new ownership, Media 360, LLC, will invest in the magazine, its website, TV shows and social media platforms and do so while being run from the top down by die-hard whitetail hunters, not Wall Street investment bankers. Deer & Deer Hunting was founded in 1977 by the Stump Sitters Whitetail Study Group. It was North America’s first whitetail-specific magazine and is largely credited for kick-starting the whitetail industry. The magazine’s founders built the brand’s niche by providing whitetail enthusiasts with cutting-edge insights on deer research, behavior, biology, hunting tactics and hunting product development. It was sold…

Throughout its life Deer & Deer Hunting Magazine has grown, and in recent decades navigated the various digital media streams including websites, online marketing, video production, television programming, and social media — without losing focus on white-tailed deer. D&DH stands without peer in the world of deer hunting. No other magazine provides so much information to everyday deer hunters. It is such good news to hear that D&DH was bought by Media 360, LLC, (a small business in deer country operated by Brad Rucks, Dan Schmidt and Steve Bartylla) from the F+W Media corporate conglomerate headquartered in New York City. This is big news for deer hunters, but for everyone it’s a lesson that big business doesn’t have all the answers, and that a few grass-roots guys who are committed to high…

DEER OF THE MONTH Huge congratulations goes out to Kim Sullivan and her biggest buck to date! She hunted through an extremely windy day on November 20, 2016, in Franklin County, Virginia, and made a 50-yard shot to drop the buck. Way to go Kim! why ibleed ddh

With all due honor and respect, the name of this article belongs to the late, great Charles Alsheimer. He was the first one to pen an article by this title in Deer & Deer Hunting, and aptly so: He was the ultimate contributor for so many years (1979 to 2017, to be exact). My veins are equally wired, but if I’m to be truly honest, my reasons for bleeding D&DH are split between selfish and altruistic motives. Beginning with the self-serving side, let me introduce myself, please. My name is Steve Bartylla, and I’m an addict. My addiction is learning all I realistically can about whitetails, their habitat and how the two work in concert. I sincerely get a rush from learning about these topics that booze and drugs can never match.…

creatures of the swamp

My friend Lou Kindred had his suspicions of swamp potential confirmed several years ago, when he and family members headed for a wetland near where they’d been hunting on dry ground. “The first couple of weekends of the season had quite a bit of hunting pressure,” he told me. “None of us were used to it or liked it, so we headed back into a nearby swamp, primarily to get away from as many people as we could. “That’s no different from what bucks do, especially the good ones, which we realized shortly after we started hunting the swamp seriously and began to know our way around back in there.” The more time they spent out in the swamp — on the dry islands, specifically — the more deer of the antlered variety…

spectacular signposts

Scrapes made by whitetail bucks are an exciting sight for deer hunters for several reasons. For one, most scrapes are made by mature, dominant bucks. Two, the maker sometimes returns to check his scrapes. And three, a dominant buck’s scrapes serve as social centers of deer activity. Knowing how, where, when and why scrapes are made won’t guarantee you hunting success, but could help put you in the right place at the right time. Unfortunately, I doubt if any other deer hunting related subject has been more abused by the popular press. A COMPLEX SIGNPOST Scrapes are complex signposts that probably serve two primary purposes. First, scrapes are an aggressive expression of dominance directed at other males. Second, they allow the buck to communicate to females his presence, superior status and readiness to…
