welcome

WELCOME TO THE DECEMBER 2020 issue of Digital SLR Photography. The marked drop in temperature and highly changeable weather makes it clear we’re well into the autumn season of what has been a year we’ll never forget. The optimism I had earlier in 2020 that we’d soon have the Covid pandemic under control proved sadly mistaken, but I remain hopeful that a solution isn’t too far away. From a photographer’s perspective, one of the biggest effects it has had on our pastime is limiting our travel, which in turn has reduced the options we have for photography. However, one subject that might be easier in some respects during these troubled times is architecture. Ancients - Broken Birch by Jasper Goodall www.jaspergoodall.com “I shoot primarily at night because I love the atmosphere of the world after dark. Everything is quiet, people have gone home, and the landscape becomes – for a few hours – more of a wilderness. The night belongs to the deer, the owl and the fox. I feel like a trespasser, allowed a glimpse into another world. In darkness there is a powerful re-activation of childhood fears and wild imaginings; the possibility of a fairytale realm edges just a little closer.“ Nikon Z 7 with Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S lens. Exposure: 15 seconds at f/8 (ISO 200). Ancients - Beech Pollard by Jasper Goodall www.jaspergoodall.com (Right) “A shot that's part of an ongoing project documenting old, large or remarkable trees. This Beech is huge and must…

diy a macro flash diffuser

SOME PHOTOGRAPHERS SAY the season for macro photography has come to an end, but that’s not the case. Subject choices might be more limited but there’s still plenty to shoot throughout autumn and even winter, indoors and out, and you don’t have to go far to find them either. From colour-changing or frost-covered leaves, dewy grass and rain-covered insects to fungi and spiders’ webs, abstract patterns and textures – macro photography is a world of year-round possibilities. You could use a lightbox to backlight, window light to softly illuminate or diffused flash – off-camera, on-camera or, even at a stretch, your pop-up flash. Flash, however, is the trickiest of the three light sources to use when it comes to macro photography but the most helpful too. The benefit of flash…
