flights of fancy

As a child, I was completely beguiled by PL Travers’ Mary Poppins stories; to such a degree that when I saw the Disney film, it was a slight disappointment. True, the songs were unforgettable, and Julie Andrews was beauteous, but I’d never imagined that Mary would be quite such an angelic figure, and Hollywood’s Technicolor cartoons simply weren’t as astonishing as the mysterious landscape of the original books. In Disney’s new film version, however, Emily Blunt plays the famous nanny with the same streak of thrilling unpredictability as the original character, which is why we are so delighted to be celebrating her on our cover this month (along with a charming robin redbreast and a pack of harum-scarum dogs). Similarly, the spirit of magic – with a dash of mayhem –…

EMILY BLUNT This Christmas, our cover star (right) reinterprets PL Travers’ magical nanny for a new generation with her latest film, Mary Poppins Returns. Blunt posed with a resplendent robin redbreast and a pack of mischievous hounds, before riding a carousel horse and taking to the streets of London with her signature umbrella in hand (page 112). An unusual family festive tradition ‘My dad bizarrely likes to watch Zulu or Doctor Zhivago every Christmas.’ What’s on your Christmas wish list? ‘Let’s go for world peace, shall we?’ Your favourite festive food ‘I love mince pies but they don’t have them in New York so I have to make them.’ Your resolution for the New Year ‘To wear high heels – sometimes.’ How will you spend New Year’s Eve? ‘For the past couple of years we have…

joy to the world

THE MAGPIE For the woman who always dazzles at a party, look for gifts that are as sparkling as her conversation. ERDEM’s shimmering silver skirt will allow her to outshine the Christmas lights, while a celestial clutch by ASPINAL is the ideal accessory for a starry night and FISURA’s golden lava lamp will illuminate a bleak midwinter. THE HOSTESS Make a consummate entertainer house-proud by giving her everything she needs to host the soirée of the season, from AUDENZA’s art deco bar trolley to a bottle of LOUIS ROEDERER Champagne. She’ll be a stylish mistress of ceremonies in scarlet MANOLO BLAHNIK kitten heels, and with a PIAGET watch on her wrist she’ll ensure the evening runs like clockwork. THE GRANDE DAME What do you buy for the woman who has everything? You can start by…

my moodboard

Architecture and interior decoration proved rich sources of inspiration for Mary Katrantzou’s A/W 18 show in the brand’s 10th-anniversary year. ‘I started by exploring Victorian interiors and the era’s fascination with ornamentation; the beauty of curtain drapes, the geometry of 19th-century tiles and the beginning of the Arts and Crafts movement,’ says the designer. The resulting collection is a rich collage of tapestry, juxtaposed with monochrome pattern and pointillist painting. On velvet dresses, William Morris’ signature romantic floral designs have been overlaid with graphic print and symbols taken from the Bauhaus. ‘I wanted to explore the disciplines of modernism, which culminated in the industrial model of living,’ Katrantzou explains. The effect of such unexpected contrast is both thought-provoking and thrilling: the Bauhaus itself would have dubbed it a Gesamtkunstwerk –…
