hope & glory

Great Britain is blessed with many remarkable buildings where history still breathes within the fabric of the walls – castles, cathedrals, mansions and manor houses – yet few places can match Kensington Palace for its resonance and romance. The birthplace of Queen Victoria 200 years ago, it remains central to the Royals today, as home to Prince William and his young family (along with various other relatives of the Queen, who occupy adjoining apartments). The Palace is therefore a regal residence that continues to evolve as a signifier of monarchy: nowadays it even has its own social-media presence on Twitter and Instagram, as the official account of the Dukes and Duchesses of Cambridge and Sussex. Harry and Meghan began their married life within its hallowed grounds; and it was here, too,…

JENNA COLEMAN ‘This is my path, this is my life, this is what I’ve been born into,’ says our cover star (above). She is talking about Queen Victoria’s road to power, but could equally be describing her own meteoric rise to fame, which has taken her from Emmerdale and Doctor Who to a career-defining role as the young Victoria. We photograph the actress at Kensington Palace ahead of the ITV drama’s third series (page 158). Your favourite place in the British Isles ‘Pitlochry – I love the walks, the green trees as far as the eye can see, and the air that’s so cold and clear. I was there to film Victoria, and I’m going back with my family.’ A garden you love ‘Regent’s Park. I used to walk through it every day…

TALKING TABOOS ‘I’m a feminist but… sometimes I think the patriarchy does look very comfortable.’ If you’ve ever felt bad for harbouring thoughts that don’t quite align with the world view of an emancipated, 21st-century woman, you’re not alone. Join Bazaar At Work and Deborah Frances-White (left), the comedian and co-founder of The Guilty Feminist podcast, for a witty exploration of modern mores, and how we can create greater equality in the working world. The event will take place at 6.30pm on Monday 9 April at the Shop, Petersham Nurseries, 31 King Street, London WC2. Tickets cost £40, which includes a glass of Laurent-Perrier Champagne. ‘When you go on a creative journey, magic happens,’ says the designer Gabriela Hearst. ‘It’s like invoking certain spirits.’ For S/S 19, Hearst was inspired by the ‘unconditional artist/muse devotion’ between María Kodama and Jorge Luis Borges, and Salvador and Gala Dalí. She also gleaned ideas from Madrid’s Prado Museum, basing a new jewellery range of gold chains and rings set with lapis lazuli on Quentin Massys’ 16th-century portrait Christ Presented to the People. ‘I wanted to reflect the simplicity of the outfits in the painting, but with their richness of fabrics, draping and structure,’ she says. During the show, models wore sophisticated dresses, from sherbet pink slips to pleated styles made from silk and linen, and a navy evening look embroidered with freshwater pearls. But for Hearst, this romance…

my life, my style

Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi have been residents of the same quiet street in west London for over a decade. The husband-and-wife team behind Preen used to occupy their elegant Victorian townhouse alone; now they share it with their two young daughters Fauve and Blythe, a goldfish called Sushi and, the latest addition to the family, Ginger the cockapoo. ‘It was quite hard to actually see the house when we first looked round, because the previous owners had so much stuff,’ says Thea. ‘But we fell in love with the proportions, the natural light and the fact that there’s a park at the end of the road – it was perfect for us.’ Today, as we sit sipping peppermint tea from vintage china cups, Thornton is dressed in his ‘uniform’ of…
