welcome to the issue

NO MATTER what the state of the world may be, the holidays are a time to celebrate the good things in life, and to do so with style. With this in mind, we present our annual gift guide, filled with treasures to suit every taste, whether you’re shopping for a frequent flier who’s seen it all or a gardening guru with a love of florals (page 135). And when you’re ready to hit the party circuit, our Fabulous at Every Age feature has you covered—preferably in black, and dripping with diamonds (page 170). Elsewhere, Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing shares his perfect Christmas Day (page 196), and Iman recalls the Giambattista Valli dress that changed her life (page 146). Who knows? Perhaps you’ll find one that changes yours. Enjoy the issue. DON PENNY/STUDIO…

editor’s letter

As we prepare to bid farewell to 2017, we look to the future with a renewed sense of optimism. It’s certainly been a memorable year for women, kicking off with the almost five-million-strong Women’s March in January, and culminating in a watershed moment that saw the women of Hollywood— and around the world—unite in defense of our dignity and the right to dress however we please. With this in mind, we pay tribute in this issue to the army of fearless fashion renegades past and present with our Ageless Style essay. As Bazaar has proudly championed women for 150 years, we know that the fight is far from over. Fashion has the ability to transform, inspire, and provide that all-important feel-good factor, something we could all use a little more…

the buy fashion

TASSELS HAVE PLAYED a supporting role in countless major fashion trends—from cowgirl cool to rock ’n’ roll chic—but Balmain knows how to put them front and center. Their swaggering presence on the house’s prim new purse is a case in point. With its gold chain, black leather body, and beaded embellishments, this LBB (little black bag) is an exercise in maximalist monochrome— and proof positive that too much can be just right. PRESENTED BY BALMAIN PARTY LIKE IT’S 1999—literally— with the return of that once-maligned ’90s standby, the high-fashion flat. Karl Lagerfeld Paris’s backless satin slipper with embroidered-pearl appliqué will have you shaking your tail feather well past the witching hour. PRESENTED BY KARL LAGERFELD PARIS The BUY Jewelry LEAVE IT TO collaborator Gigi Hadid to help Messika bridge the gap between St. Marks Place…

the dress that changed my life

I WAS IN A CAR coming home from the airport in 2010 when Diane von Furstenberg called me and said, “Darling, the CFDA has nominated you.” And I’m like, “For what? I’m not a designer.” And she said, “The Fashion Icon Award. It was unanimous.” And I said, “Well, I’m honored.” Then automatically I was like, “What the hell am I going to wear?” I knew I wanted something that would transcend time, that nobody could ever put a date on. I didn’t want a color, so if you look at a black-and-white picture it could have been 1950. It had to be couture and have a presence but feel timeless and iconic. Giambattista [Valli] had sent me a couple of dresses for other events, and beautiful as they were, they took…
