SHINE ON “With my busy schedule, I don’t have time for extra appointments. So when it comes to my nails, I prefer to let OPI’s new Infinite Shine Primer and Gloss with exclusive ProStay technology do all the work. The three-part system— which includes a primer base coat, color, and gloss top coat—was developed to ensure salon-quality results without the hassle. You’ll get up to 11 days of gel-like wear and shine, with no UV light and no high-maintenance removal needed. With 30 of OPI’s most iconic shades just added to the collection, you’ll be ready for sandal weather in no time.” Visit opi.com for details. editor’s letter

Springtime never fails to fill me with anticipation— for the latest clothes, accessories, and makeup of the season, and for the bold new heights Bazaar strives to reach as we cover it all. No one flies higher than this month’s cover star, Rihanna, who embodies the pioneering aviator Amelia Earhart in a fashion shoot on the ground and in the air. Earhart herself penned a charming essay for Bazaar in 1929, “Plane Clothes,” which we have reprinted to accompany the images. I think you’ll find it witty and timeless—who can’t relate to her preference for a suitable low heel in the right professional situation? In a different flight of fancy, it seems as if we’re all walking around like zombies these days, from the runways to the world stage. Photographer Mark…

dior’s revolution

ON THE MORNING of February 12, 1947, Harper’s Bazaar editor Carmel Snow attended the presentation of Christian Dior’s first collection at the house’s salon at 30 Avenue Montaigne in Paris. Ninety looks were shown, punctuated by a radical silhouette with a tight waist and a full skirt that ended mid-calf. Afterward, Snow remarked, “It’s quite a revolution, dear Christian. Your dresses have such a new look.” A reporter from Reuters overheard Snow’s comment, and the next day, papers around the world carried the news of Dior’s “New Look,” which Snow would soon feature prominently in the magazine. PHOTOGRAPHER, DIOR’S NEW GUARD JEANPAUL GOUDE Capturing fencers dressed in Maria Grazia Chiuri’s debut collection for Dior, Goude found the shoot’s spirit of female empowerment to be palpable. “I wish these potential goldmedal winners the best of luck because I really care for them.” FEMALE ICONS, THEN AND NOW RIHANNA The indomitable singer, and this month’s cover star, pays homage to Bazaar’s 150year history by embodying fellow trailblazer Amelia Earhart, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, who wrote an essay for the magazine on what to wear in the air. WRITER, A FAST LIFE JOAN JULIET BUCK “I didn’t know when I sat down to write the piece that it would end up being about Leonard [Cohen], but the essay told me where it wanted to go. He was a man who wrote about love…
