I was sitting with Karl Lagerfeld in his Paris atelier recently when his longtime muse and collaborator Amanda Harlech walked over bearing a piece from the collection to show him: a brooch resembling the designer’s beloved cat, Choupette, with Chanel “C”’s for eyes. Elated, he turned to his team and proclaimed, “We need to make sure to get that in diamonds for me.” Karl’s dynamism is one reason Chanel is such a coveted ticket each season, but at its Fall 2016 show, everyone in attendance got to experience the fanfare from the front row. The catwalk was so long that Chanel’s models covered half a mile during the show. Thankfully, as Karl said, the fall runways were full of flats and thicktread boots, ushering in a season that’s decidedly down-to-earth.…

It was in the early ’80s. I was in a theater group in school, and we did everything ourselves, including makeup. It was a D.I.Y.-type thing, very post-punk.
