Size counts Interior and furniture designer Mpho Vackier of Centurion has a flair for exciting décor elements and rich texture – and her own guest loo is a perfect expression of her creativity. A bold, oversized Tretchikoff print creates an impressive focal wall and works beautifully in this small space. Wallpaper from Robin Sprong It’s just a loo, but in my mind it’s the most beautiful loo ever!– Mpho In black and white Jeanne Botes used black-and-white geometric wallpaper to spruce up all four walls of the guest loo in her Cape Town home. To offset the dramatic print, she treated the wooden floor with Woodoc Stain in the colour Ebony. “It used to be such a dead space,” says Jeanne. “It’s not a room in which I spend a lot of time, so I…

1 A ray of sunshine Singer-songwriter Elvis Blue (Jan Hoogendyk) and his wife Chireze of George aren’t shy when it comes to using bright colours in their home – and the guest bathroom is no exception! Chireze chose a cheerful yellow for the imbuia sideboard, which now serves as a vanity. Vinyl stickers are interspersed with ceramic tiles above the loo – together they create a striking focal wall. Vinyl stickers from Robin Sprong; pendants and basin from the Sedgefield Market 2 Moody blues Throw out the rule book that says small spaces have to be light and bright! Katie Farringer proves the opposite in her tiny guest loo in Stellenbosch. “I spent a lot of time trying to brighten up this space with muted colours and it just didn’t work, so I…

#1 So fresh! A freestanding bath positioned against the glass screen of a double shower is the epitome of cool in this luxurious bathroom. The bath is a modern interpretation of the popular freestanding bath – it might not have feet, but it does put its best foot forward! Renovated several years ago, the bathroom is still on trend with its crisp white finishes combined with earthy textures such as the non-slip ceramic tiles and wooden side tables. Heated towel rails and separate shower heads finish the look. [TIP] Non-slip tiles work well in wet areas such as bathrooms. Outdoor tiles are, therefore, a good option when planning a renovation. EXPERT ADVICE Heated towel rails add an element of luxury to any bathroom. It’s not just a matter of comfort; towels dry faster, making them…

romantic at heart

#1 Pure indulgence Oluf and Michelle Erichsen have always loved European architecture, as well as sun rooms and conservatories. When they designed their home in the Glen Cullen Country Estate in Middelburg, Mpumalanga they had the layout and look of a barn in mind for the main house, complete with a corrugated iron roof and exposed-brick walls. Since the couple love to incorporate contrasting elements in all of their designs, they decided to create a bathroom that stood apart. Oluf arranged for this breathtaking structure to be imported in panels by The Crystal Conservatory to create the conservatory-style bathroom they were after. The panels were hot-dipped galvanised to get the colour just right and they had to assemble the structure themselves. “It was quite a challenge to put it together as the…
