Snapshot of life Pompeii’s House of the Vettii has reopened to the public after twenty years. This remarkable house within the iconic archaeological site can finally be admired in all its glory following several years’ exhaustive restoration work. Originally excavated between 1894 and 1896, the House of the Vettii is thought to have belonged to two freedmen brothers who became rich through wine commerce. eaven on earth in the high Dolomites Designed by the acclaimed architects at noa*, the latest addition to the Hubertus hotel in Olang, South Tyrol, is a frankly incredible upside-down wellness area. Known as ‘Heaven & Hell’, this unique space is set out on a suspended steel platform above the Dolomites, extending out beyond the main hotel and reached via a salubrious new relaxation room. The views are incredible from the upper level, but even more spectacular is the lower section, where the horizon undergoes a 180° rotation, and the huts appear to be anchored upside down. Standing strong If you’ve ever wondered how some ancient buildings such as Rome’s Pantheon have stood the test of time, a team of scientists may have struck on the answer. The Pantheon was constructed around 126 AD, yet its awe-inspiring dome remains in remarkable condition – not only does the concrete display incredible strength, but also seems able to heal itself, with cracks in the material disappearing over time. According to researchers at MIT and Harvard, small mineral deposits called lime clasts are behind this characteristic. Until now, it was thought that these white flecks were due to imperfections in the concrete, but the new research suggests they were likely to have been introduced on purpose, providing yet more evidence of the Ancient Romans’ technological ingenuity.
