to measure is to know

HERE at Leisure Wheels we have done a number of comparison tests over the years. These tests often comprise going on a trip where we will drive the competitors back to back on similar terrain. The team has years of experience testing vehicles and we are able to give an accurate opinion on vehicles by driving them in this manner, but these tests are subjective and we are only human. So, for our Bakkie of the Year test, we wanted to do things a bit differently. Bakkies are a hot topic around the water cooler or braai and we wanted to make sure we had a watertight case that could stand up to the strongest arguments by the most loyal brand supporters. We put 10 bakkies through a series of independent and…

why fit a light bar?

Email your views to editorial@leisurewheels.com or submit them via our Facebook page or the website at www.leisurewheels.co.za. Please supply your postal address, in case you win a prize. WINNING LETTER I refer to the article about your Renault Duster in the December 2019 issue of Leisure Wheels. Why did you have a full-length LED light bar fitted on the roof of this vehicle? From a practical point of view, how do you prevent the light from shining on, and reflecting off, the bonnet of the vehicle? The resultant glare will severely affect the vision of the driver of the vehicle. The light emitted by an LED light bar is also in the blue spectrum, which causes the driver’s pupils to contract. Contracted pupils result in a form of tunnel vision with a negative impact on…

here are some of your thoughts

Keep up to date with news, videos, photos and articles, with Leisure Wheels online Like our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/LeisureWheels | Follow us on Twitter: @LeisureWheelsZA | Web: www.leisurewheels.co.za SHARED ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE We have verified, model-specific bakkie sales figures for 2019. What’s your guess? Which manufacturer sold the most double cab bakkies? Cliffy Brown: What do the Ford owners say now? Their big comeback was ‘Ford sells more double cabs’. Wrong! Stefan van den Berg: Just because they sell the most does not make them the best. Some are just after a brand. It’s like Nike tekkies. Leonard Jones: Toyota has proven itself over 50 years. What about trade value? Sorry, Toyota is the best. Michael Robertson: The new Nissan Navara is way better than Ford or Toyota. Kgomotso Nkgwe: It doesn’t matter who sells more.…

paradise regained on the wild coast

Thirty years ago, this was the ideal holiday destination for the adventurous traveller. But crime, the lack of infrastructure and degeneration of the region made us forget this piece of paradise. Perhaps it is time to return. Port St Johns, the unofficial capital of the region, was a bustling town a few decades ago. Today, it reminds us of a true African town. A place where there probably are more informal traders than organised shops and businesses. A place where raw meat and live chickens are sold on the sidewalks. A place where it is a challenge to avoid the potholes and taxis. Yet it is a town with a pulsating rhythm. In town you meet the Xhosas. These are the people of Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo. They are colourful in…

riding high on sky

It makes an interesting change to be adventuring close to home and not in more distant African countries. Our neighbouring mountain kingdom of Lesotho (it has the highest average altitude of any country in the world) has always been a favourite and with it having the highest of Southern Africa’s mountain passes, it’s just heaven for our ‘Riding High on Sky’ expedition, a challenging high-altitude Land Rover and mountain-bike mission to tackle 100 of Southern Africa’s highest, toughest and most interesting mountain passes in just 30 days. I have loads of colourful memories of earlier adventures here; on one occasion, we took a clutch of old Series 1 Land Rovers – 11 old girls dating back to 1949 – grinding and bouncing up the passes of the Malotis and brought them…
