Motor Boat & Yachting

January 2020

Published by Time Inc. (UK) Ltd Motor Boat & Yachting is Europe's best motor boating magazine. It's also the oldest, with a history dating back to 1904. Our long experience makes our boat tests the most authoritative in the business and means our technical coverage is without equal. Each month we cover the best new boats on the market, cruising areas that are both practical and inspirational, and the latest boating developments and training. Core editorial focuses on boats up to 80ft, but we also venture beyond the 80ft barrier in our monthly Custom Yachting pages.

welcome…

Things used to be so simple. When I started this job, a few lifetimes ago, motor boats fell neatly into a handful of categories. There were sportscruisers for going fast and looking sleek, trawler yachts for chugging slowly through any seas, and flybridges for bridging the gap between the two. Now the lines are so blurred it’s hard to know where one genre ends and the next begins. There are sportscruisers with more accommodation than houses, flybridges that look like sportsboats and trawler yachts that charge around at 30 knots. It’s this last category that really seems to have exploded of late, both in terms of popularity and diversity. At one end of the scale are explorer yachts such as the star of our Antarctic Adventure, the FPB 64 (p42), at…

THE EDITOR’S VIEW… If the GB54 turns out to be as good at sea as it sounds on paper, it might yet recapture the iconic status which its forebears once held. I just hope that in the effort to reach those dizzy heights again it doesn’t inadvertantly price itself out of the market. 1 TWO NEW GRAND BANKS Grand Banks has announced plans for two new adventure yachts. The 54 and 85 will top and tail its revitalised range of faster, lighter but equally tough craft when they are launched next year. The new models can’t come soon enough for fans of the brand after the management’s bold decision to scrap the entire range of more traditional semi-displacement craft back in 2015 leaving just the one new GB60 model to hold the fort. The…

the boataholic

A close family member, who shall remain nameless (hello Dad!), amuses my mother and I with his assertions that many of the boats in the same marina as his never get used, simply because he never sees them being used (ignoring the possibility that owners may be using them at different times to him). Some might have assumed the same about Smuggler’s Blues this year. Total engine hours at the end of the season were a disappointing 45, less than half that of last year. But it’s not due to waning enthusiasm. The big news of 2019 was the unexpected and massive surge in popularity of my YouTube channel, AQUAHOLIC (youtube.com/aquaholic). I’d previously uploaded occasional boating videos, including some I filmed years ago of the Miami Vice Scarab in America. Inexplicably,…

my other passion is scuba diving

In 2000 my wife Elly and I took up scuba diving. We’re both adventurous types and wanted to find a water sport activity that we could enjoy together. We joined the local dive club and undertook all the necessary safety training. Our first dives were in a chilly flooded quarry but we loved it – preparing and checking the equipment, spotting the occasional fish and meeting new friends. Our dive trips always seemed to end with drinks and a good meal as we relived the highlights of the day. As our skills grew (Elly is now a three-star CMAS diver and I am a CMAS instructor) we expanded our horizons to the Dutch waters around Zeeland, the Rhine estuary, the Maas and the Schelde. Diving here is a challenge due to…

your mby

BAVARIAN BEAUTY First of all, thank you for a very interesting and informative magazine. I’ve been reading MBY for about five years and I’m hooked! I’m based on the east coast of Sweden and currently own a Bavaria Virtess 420 Coupe, which we bought in 2017 from Clipper Marine in Southampton. The whole family is very happy with the boat and boating has become such an important part of our leisure time that we are constantly looking at possible new boats that have the space and clever solutions to give us even better experiences. Bavaria’s R55 has caught my eye but there is little information about it and no proper tests of this beautiful boat. Even Bavaria only has a boring interview with the designer on its website. I know Bavaria has gone through some…
