never stop driving

FOR THOSE WHO HAVE DRIVEN AND THOSE WHO WILL—MAY THE ROAD DELIVER. We all know that the future of the automobile is autonomy, meaning self-driving appliances that work with the aid of GPS and other witchcraft to (hopefully) safely travel the highways and city streets of America. My fatalistic theory is that once the autonomous technology is proven to be effective and safe, there will come a day when Big Brother will mandate it for the population, effectively outlawing our ability to pilot our own vehicles. To me, that’s about as dystopian of a future as I can imagine. One of the key factors in my prediction is that today’s younger generation doesn’t seem to care about the personal freedom that an automobile provides. Sure, they’ll play Gran Turismo for hours…

see route 66 in your ’66!

Route 66—the Mother Road. Every car enthusiast’s bucket list item, yet how many really see to it that this bucket list line item is indeed checked off? Sure, many of us have driven a part of it, and some probably even drive a portion every day if they live near it. We’re talking start to finish—from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California, covering some 2,400 miles. It’s a trip few get to take, yet so many should. Jim Diorio, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is one of those who wanted to accomplish driving the complete Route 66, and he set out to do it in 2018. However, he didn’t have a classic car to pay homage to the drive. In July of 2017, he found a ’66 Mustang hardtop that was on its…

Our friends at Edelbrock not only make tons of great performance upgrades for us enthusiasts, but now you can also wear the brand that has been making Fords faster for over 80 years. Edelbrock’s release of its apparel and accessories features four distinct lines. See them all at edelbrock.com/shop/apparel.html. new bits

UNDER PRESSURE Depending upon your brake system design and component location, along with your Mustang’s use (track car, for example), sometimes you need to employ a residual pressure valve to prevent disc brake pad retraction—commonly referred to as knockback—from vibration, shock loads, and more. Wilwood Disc Brakes has offered 2- and 10-psi valves previously (blue and red, respectively), and now the company has introduced its gold 4-psi residual pressure valve, adding an option between the two previously offered valves. The 4-psi gold valve uses the same 1/8-inch/27 NPT female thread in the aluminum body as its other offerings. Individual valves are available under part number 260-15365 or packaged with a pair of 3/8-inch/24 IF adapter fittings for use with a standard 3/16-inch brake line under part number 260-15366. reggie verret still has the 1970 boss 302 he bought new, and he won’t sell it—no matter what

WHILE WE WERE IN BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA, TO COVER THE MUSTANGS CONSUMED BY TREES (mustang-360.com/features/1904-ponys-in-the-trees), Thad Landaiche took us to see a 1970 Boss 302 that he had noticed in the backyard of the car’s original owner, Vietnam veteran Reginald “Reggie” Verret. Thad told us how he had knocked on Reggie’s door, hoping he might make a deal. Like the rest of us, Thad is always looking for a buyable barn find, especially from an original owner. Unfortunately, the car wasn’t for sale. In fact, Reggie showed us a foundation for a garage he was planning to build where he could restore this car. (Recent floods had thwarted this effort.) He was happy to show us his 1970 Boss 302 and tell us what it was like to buy one brand…
