Photographer: Ken Kaminesky Location: Diamond Beach at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, Iceland Equipment: Fujifilm X-T1, FUJINON XF10-24mmF4 R OIS WR, Formatt-Hitech Firecrest ND 6-stop filter. Situation: Unique, breathtaking and soul-stirring can all be used to describe one of my all-time favorite places on this big, beautiful planet, Diamond Beach at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon in Iceland. Seeing this mystical place for the first time is a top travel memory for me since I had no idea what to expect. No photo, video or written description can do this location justice in terms of the intoxicating sensory overload of sights, smells, sounds and the touch one can experience there, especially when alone. Having fallen in love with Iceland’s spellbinding landscapes from the first day of exploring the island nation, I ended up running photography tours there for many…

As a resident of sunny Southern California, winter is my favorite season. Here winter brings cooler, milder weather and a respite from the record-breaking temperatures of summer and fall. But in other parts of our country—maybe where you are—this time of year blankets wild landscapes in snowy serenity. Photographers with a passion for the season often talk about the quiet and solitude that comes after summer crowds have retreated indoors as one of the motivating reasons to gear up and get out there. “Winter may be cold and intimidating,” begins Kristen Ryan, “but its mesmerizing beauty makes it worth the challenge to capture its magic.” In “The Allure Of The Winter Landscape,” Ryan tells how she became fascinated by winter photography and offers both practical and creative advice to inspire you…

First Light, First Snow By Harry Lichtman “Experiencing the first snow of the season is always a special occasion. I saw a wet snow was forecasted for New Hampshire’s White Mountains that might leave the trees coated while the surrounding ponds and waterways remained unfrozen. The possibility of reflections and the remaining colors of the landscape bleeding through are higher before the heavier snows of the season. A cold rain turned to snow and ice, ensuring that the branches retained the snow even under breezy conditions. Clearing near sunrise provided some calming pastel colors. This is a three-image stitched panorama.” See more of Harry Lichtman’s work at HarryLichtman.com. Snowy Morning At The Grand Canyon By Theresa Rose Ditson “It was a very blustery but beautiful scene at the edge of Arizona’s natural wonder, watching the storm…

CAMERAS CAMERA OF THE YEAR CANON EOS R5 The Canon EOS R5 is the new flagship of the Canon EOS R full-frame mirrorless system, and the 45-megapixel camera excels in both still and video capabilities. Of all of the impressive full-frame mirrorless cameras introduced this year, it represents an important benchmark in the development of Canon’s EOS R system and full-frame mirrorless cameras more generally. The EOS R5 can capture stills at continuous shooting rates of 12 fps using its mechanical shutter, or up to 20 fps with the silent electronic shutter, ideal for wildlife photography. It offers a 5-axis in-body Image Stabilizer system that can coordinate with the Optical Image Stabilizer in compatible Canon RF lenses, enabling up to 8 stops of correction depending on the lens used. It’s also the first camera (along…

ruby beach

Location Ruby Beach is located in Olympic National Park in Washington state and is accessible via U.S. Route 101. The beach is the northernmost beach in the Kalaloch area and is approximately 10 miles north of Kalaloch Lodge. The beach is located a quarter mile from the parking lot and is an easy hike, although you might have to climb over some driftwood. Weather It was late September when I visited Ruby Beach. The weather was in the 50s with quite a bit of rain. The year-round temperatures don’t fluctuate too drastically, ranging from an average low in the mid 30s in the winter to an average high in the low 70s in the summer. During the summer, you can expect relatively warm, dry conditions. This is the best time of year to…
