fortnightly thought yummy issue

THERE are no tricks for you in this issue of people – only treats. There are some delicious chocolate cake recipes from pages 31, which will have you drooling over our mag, as well as a list of spooky places you should visit in South Africa this Halloween (page 42)! And while not quite so lighthearted as the others, we also have a fascinating article covering the latest movie sensation, Joker, and how it’s sparked all sorts of conversation about mental health. Did you know that, according to the South African Depression and Anxiety Group, only a quarter of people with a diagnosable mental disorder are receiving treatment? This is a shocking statistic. I think part of the reason for this is that mental illness is still very much a…

hit & mistress

THERE’S no question Angelina Jolie has some jolie good genes going for her. Time and a really rather ugly separation process (seriously, are they still not divorced?) haven’t been able to do much on her elegance and natural beauty. True, she’s still looking a little on the thin side, but as you can see from her appearance at the European premiere of Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil in London, there’s a glow to her that just keeps going. Her dress, too, was quite the eye-catcher, although how she managed to avoid tripping on it is a wonder in itself.…

in case you missed it!

1 ADAM LEVINE penned his new track with Maroon 5 in honour of his former manager and late friend, Jordan Feldstein. Jordan, who was the older brother of actor and comedian Jonah Hill, passed away in December 2017 from a blood clot in his leg. He was just 40 years old. Opening up about the band’s new single during an appearance The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Adam described Memories as ‘a heavy song’, before sharing the heartbreaking inspiration behind the tune. “I had just gone through losing my manager and best friend,” he shared. “I was in diapers with this guy. And he passed away recently, and so this song came to me at a very interesting time. I filled in the holes with the proper words that I thought would…

dstv cuts a+e networks’ channels from its platform

THINGS aren’t looking all that great for DStv subscribers who, having been hit with a slew of high tariff costs over the past few years, must now say goodbye to popular channels History, Lifetime and Crime+Investigation, which will be removed from the service at the end of October. It’s been reported that negotiations between MultiChoice and A+E Networks, who own the channels, have broken down, and viewers will now no longer be able to watch a slew of popular series, from Little Women to Homicide Hunter and The First 48, as well Lifetime movies and specials like Surviving R Kelly. DStv says that the decision to axe the channels forms part of its ‘ongoing efforts to refresh their content line-up and optimise the suite of channels on offer’. “We are continuously reviewing…

breast halloween ever?

THOSE who harbour an, ahem, appreciation for the female figure will have plenty to cheer about throughout the entire month of October. For the few who sport a great enthusiasm for Halloween, here’s your proverbial stone and two birds. A trend has picked up on Instagram and it sees thousands of not-so-shy women the world over baring their breasts in an artistic sort of way. The fad sees scores of women, who are obvious fans of the spooky holiday, adorn their boobs with paint, crystals and sequins. It’s not just a case of splattering any medium across their assets – there has to be some artistic, Halloween-themed merit involved. Women paint anything from skulls and jack-o-lanterns to creepy-crawlies and superhero regalia on their chests. Some even paint their buttocks! The…

counter feat

IT’S important to remember that not everyone has the same sense of humour as you do, especially when you’re travelling in a foreign country. Twenty-eight-year-old Russian Vadim Vedenyapin has learnt this the hard way when what was reportedly a joke landed him a potential 10-year stint in a Thai prison. Accounts vary, but the gist of the story is that Vadim, who was travelling with his family in Thailand, handed bar staff a novelty bank note in mock payment for purchases as a joke. The note was a souvenir dollar bill, and was, according to Vadim’s wife, clearly marked as such. But the Thai staff weren’t laughing and reported Vadim to the police, after which he was arrested on charges of trying to distribute counterfeit money. He was released on…
