Over the years, I’ve come to realise how important colour is in my home, not only with regards to how it looks, but also how it feels. I’ve dabbled with lots of different shades in our various houses, but when I think about the spaces that have always made me feel most relaxed, there’s a common theme. Turns out that both myself and my husband (amazingly!) are typically drawn to the soft, watery hues of blue, green and grey. As we’re both water signs, love swimming and feel happiest when we’re near the sea, perhaps it’s no surprise that we feel a natural pull towards all things aquatic in colour. Having recently redecorated my living room in a deep green-grey tone (Farrow & Ball’s Pigeon, in case you’re interested), I finally…

I’ve always been a fan of colour pop. I painted the kitchen walls lilac in our first house, a bold move that didn’t quite work, mostly because the cupboards were a faux wood mint green. In my defence, there wasn’t much of a product selection to choose from when you bought a new-build back in the late nineties. These were the days when they still sucked you into the half-carpeted kitchen-diner in the show houses (we picked beige; a decision that proved particularly unsavvy after a bottle of red was spilt within two weeks of moving in). I hadn’t had much experience of DIY stores, and trips to B&Q with its row after row of glorious paint colours left me both overexcited and overwhelmed. This was before Pinterest; the only…

WHY WE’RE LOVING EMMA’S HOME One of the first things that Emma Rawlinson and her husband Matt did on collecting the keys to their new home was to head round to the property with a sledge hammer. They had a four-month window for turning their ‘absolutely knackered’ former HMO – in an otherwise smart neighbourhood of Cheltenham – into a functioning family home in time for Christmas, and didn’t want to waste a moment in getting started. So began their project to convert a semi-detached late Victorian villa consisting of seven bedsits into a comfortable and boldly decorated four-bedroom home. The project required a complete rewire, the building of two single-storey extensions for the kitchen and playroom, and rejigging the upstairs space to add a shower room and dressing room on the…

TILE IT ON Harvey Maria’s new luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) collection is inspired by Victorian pottery company Mintons’ colourful encaustic floor tiles. Northmore, which comes in six colourways, blends unique designs, heritage colour pigment and authentic patina in waterproof, slip resistant LVTs. They cost £47.35 per square metre. See Northmore’s smart look for utility floors on page 54 Three in one Get more of a view in a converted loft or extension with a roof window that has a panoramic effect. Velux’s new Studio roof window features three window sashes in one frame. Two centre-pivot windows sit either side of a fixed window unit, so you can decide how much air you let in. But the biggest advantages are the abundance of light the triple window brings in and the increased view. Installation is…
