Travel has long fired the imagination. Throughout history, many adventurers have embarked on life-changing expeditions that broaden the mind. While our personal journeys may not have the epic scope of literary odysseys, the modern traveller can easily attest to the irresistible allure of wanderlust. In this issue, we discuss the myriad ways travel can change our visual perspective and shape the ways in which we design our homes. The annual Milan Design Week is a rich source of inspiration for designers and homeowners alike; we covered the fair and discovered trend-setting collections in our report (pages 44 and 74). Elsewhere, our well-travelled writers explore the revitalised waterfront districts in London, Hong Kong and New York (page 68). These former industrial sites are becoming vibrant neighbourhoods filled with creative initiatives to inspire…

HISTORIC BEAUTY A former theatre has been transformed into The Hoxton Portland, a new American boutique property designed in response to the building’s past life and the city’s thriving arts scene. The public areas of the Portland hotel have been revitalised by Fettle to incorporate the original wooden columns, old plaster finishes, and textured concrete with the architectural elements of its new extension; a plush mix of mohair, velvet, dark wood and leather complete its handsome look. thehoxton.com STYLISH DIVISION Now available bigger than ever, the sculptural look of the Shanghai bookcase by Bavuso Giuseppe from Alivar creates an instant visual impact; its large proportions makes it suitable as a room divider too. Measuring 3.12m in length and 2.37m in height, this new edition features a painted black or heat-treated outer frame that’s paired…

When Jaime Hayón’s collaboration with Fritz Hansen first started in 2011, it came as a surprise to pundits and even the Spanish designer himself. “It’s been a very intense relationship,” admits Hayón. “I was supposed to be the person that would definitely not fit the company when they met me. I was too wild, too crazy.” Fast-forward to today, this unexpected pairing has since proven to be a winning partnership. Since then, Hayón has created collections that tap into the brand’s furniture-making repertoire while embracing his joyful aesthetic. Most recently, the Madrid-born designer created a series of showrooms for the brand in Asia, including its Singapore flagship (pictured above). “I try to create an atmosphere that has the feeling of being in a hotel or a home,” he explains. It’s about…

set the stage

As we step inside a historic apartment, we’re serenaded by jazzy tunes as well as the soundtrack of Wong Kar-Wai’s iconic film, In the Mood for Love; the scene in front of us looks like it’s part of a stage set. We’re visiting the André Fu Living presentation, which was held during Milan Design Week. Tapping into his expertise in hospitality design, the collection realises the needs of an itinerant traveller; its layout also references the geometry of the Jantar Mantar, the world’s largest sundial in Jaipur, India. “It’s a complete scenography,” explains Fu. “The whole idea of this collection is derived from a person’s life at different times of the day. There is a place to dine, a place to work and a place to rest; that’s how the whole…
