bowers & wilkins zeppelin

Before Bluetooth became a standard audiophiles were willing to trust, docks were all the rage. And among docks, Bowers & Wilkins’ Zeppelin was iconic, offering detailed sound, impressive volume and quirky looks all in a single package. But despite being updated multiple times over the years, B&W’s audio airship hasn’t quite been able to compete with the Echoes or Sonoses of this world for sheer flexibility… until now. Thanks to a combination of a 150mm sub, 90mm mid-range drivers and its fully isolated Decoupled Double-Dome tweeters, the all-new Zeppelin offers the next-level, room-filling sound you’d expect. There’s a right time for everything, especially Christmas traditions. Xmas decorations in shops? Not before 1 December. Costumes in the workplace? Only once I’ve dug my Humbug hat out of the washing basket. Slade? Back in the 1970s, when we didn’t know any better. I’m unflinchingly grinchy about the rush to celebrate Christmas earlier each year. Partly because I think it devalues it. Mostly because I was brought up to believe only lion-murdering witches want it to snow all year round. But this year, thanks to ongoing shortages of technology, groceries and lorry drivers, it’s looking like it might be worth preparing a little earlier than the Monday before Xmas. So if, like me, you’re looking to get a little ahead of the game this year, we’ve got some great features in…

1 AMAZON ASTRO $999 (around £735), amazon.com One look at Astro, Amazon’s wheeled smart bot, should be enough to convince you that this is, in equal parts, a tremendously stupid and utterly brilliant idea. Stupid because, well, beyond very specific use cases this absolutely isn’t something you need or couldn’t replace with static hardware that costs a lot less – and that hardware may even be able to cover multiple floors. We suspect Astro’s cutesy personality may test the limits of your tolerance over time, and while it can be deactivated at a touch (and Amazon has been careful about encrypting the majority of the robot’s data) Astro’s wandering brings the uncomfortable reality of the cloud’s ever-listening ears into sharp focus. But still, brilliant. Astro uses Amazon’s Intelligent Motion tech to help it…
