microsoft returns with smartphone after high-profile flops

After high-profile flops, Microsoft is getting back into smartphones with a dual-screen Android device that won’t be out for another year. Microsoft unveiled the Surface Duo as part of a new lineup of Surface computers. It marks a reversal for a company that abandoned smartphones following lackluster demand for its own operating system and an ill-fated purchase of smartphone maker Nokia. “I believe the third time’s a charm for Microsoft and smartphones,”said Patrick Moorhead, an analyst with Moor Insights & Strategy. He said Microsoft has had a good track record with Surface devices, while the Duo’s novel design offers something new at a time when phone innovation has been slowing down. Microsoft says the Duo makes phone calls, though it stopped short of calling it a phone. Though it runs Android, the back…

google rolls out updated privacy tools for youtube, maps

Google is rolling out more tools for users to control their privacy settings. The company and other tech giants are facing increased scrutiny over the amount of data they collect from their users. Google and Facebook both debuted new privacy tools this year. Now, YouTube users will be able to set their search and viewing histories to auto-delete after a set period of time. Google Maps will have an incognito mode, which means a user’s movements won’t be recorded when it’s turned on. It will be available on Android this month. Google did not give an exact date for iOS. Google also says people will be able to delete their voice histories from artificial intelligence system Assistant using a voice command.…

ruby rose ready to defend gotham in the cw’s ‘batwoman’

Ruby Rose says she went public about sustaining serious injuries while performing stunts on her new CW series “Batwoman” because she hated that by keeping it quiet, she was lying. The actress recently posted a video of herself undergoing surgery to her Instagram account with a caption explaining she suffered two herniated discs while performing stunt work. Her spinal cord was in jeopardy of being severed, and she was in so much pain that she says she couldn’t feel her arms. Rose said she realized it was better to be authentic about what happened, especially since she’s a public figure. “Something that we do as a society and especially Hollywood, and that is we kind of promote this ideal life,” she said, “Everything is effortless and it’s not, you know what I mean? I…

walmart to test new health care services for workers

Walmart is rolling out a health care pilot program for its employees that will come up with a curated list of high quality providers but offer fewer choices than under the current plan. Through the program, Walmart will help employees connect with local doctors in areas like primary care, cardiology and obstetrics. It is working with Nashville-based data analytics company Embold Health, which will cull through vast amounts of data from public and private insurance plans to come up with recommended providers based on effectiveness and cost-efficiency. Walmart will in turn use that data to curate a list for employees. “It’s a thoughtful approach to a goal of better health and better health care,” said Adam Stavisky, senior vice president US benefits, Walmart during a media call on Wednesday. The program will…

dr. dre, iovine unveil high-tech new building at usc

Andre“Dr. Dre”Young and Jimmy Iovine want a new high-tech building bearing their names at the University of Southern California to become a place where young creatives can understand marrying the concepts of art, technology and business. The music business partners along with USC’s head school officials unveiled the Iovine and Young Hall on the campus during a dedication ceremony on Wednesday afternoon. The school’s marching band commemorated the moment by playing its fight song “Fight On” while confetti exploded into the air after the ribbon cutting. “What this school does is as much as what it doesn’t do,” said Iovine, a music industry entrepreneur who is known as the co-founder of Interscope Records. “What it doesn’t do is cut off that potential in your freshman year and silos you into something,” Iovine continued.…
