KNIT IT BETTER We knitters have long known that our craft can make us feel better - and the experts agree with us! Charity Knit for Peace has reviewed all the current evidence analysing the links between knitting and health, and also surveyed 1000 knitters. Their findings show that knitting is effective at lowering blood pressure, reducing anxiety and depression, distracting from chronic pain, and providing an increased sense of wellbeing. Search Press, meanwhile, has published a book of therapeutic patterns aimed at helping to reduce stress. from dorset with love

Designer Clare Devine took a road trip around Dorset - and the textures and colours she saw on her seaside adventure inspired this new collection of six knitting patterns, all using yarns by independent hand-dyers. ‘Kimmeridge’ is a comfortable cardigan with a shawl collar, sized to fit busts of 27in to 54in, which will be perfect for walks on the beach. ‘Lulworth Cove’ is a richly textured hat with a folded brim, which will provide a touch of extra warmth on a blustery day out. Coastal colours influenced the design of ‘Corfe Castle’, a wide shawl worked in blocks of two shades with sweeping lines of eyelets. The collection includes a pair of fingerless mitts, which will look extra-special worked in a hand-dyed yarn, plus two pairs of socks: ‘Studland’, a long,…

cotton denim

Cotton Denim DK is a fantastic summer yarn from Debbie Bliss, offering softness, comfort and machine-washability. It comes in a range of denim-inspired blues and beautiful washed-out pastels, and Debbie has created a range of new pattern leaflets using this pure cotton. Our favourite is a thoroughly modern sweater with a nod to traditional styles. Design number DB101 is a women’s jumper with panels of cables and braids worked in three shades of blue. Also for women, DB100 is a summery boatneck top with patchwork effect. It’s worked in a single rib pattern throughout, with a cable column on one side and an intarsia field of smaller ribs on the other side. For children, there’s a cute baseball-style jacket with an intarsia star motif, striped ribbed hems and contrast-colour sleeves (ref. DB098), and…
