1 When crafting the ‘Minnewaska’ chandelier ($14,400) from silver, Jonah Meyer of Saw kille Co channels the skills of his father, a smith who also worked the soft and luminescent metal. Ring 001 845 217 7890, or visit sawkille.com. 2 If these plates seem familiar it’s because the two pat terns, ‘Chaw ton Rose bud Moiré’ (top) and ‘Chawton Vine’, have appeared on these pages before as wall papers. (They were copied by Ham ilton Weston using 19th-century scraps found at Jane Austen’s House Museum in Hampshire.) Hand-painted to order by Sophie Andrews, a Janeite blogger, the plates cost £75 each, with a percentage going to the above institution. But for anyone unfamiliar with their oeuvre I have one word: portières. Gosh, they loved them. After ploughing through this ambitious tome you could be forgiven for thinking the two grands fromages of postwar French interiors were competing to see who could use them most.
