We were inspired by the bicentenary of Emily Brontë’s birth this summer to follow in her footsteps to the Yorkshire moorlands she loved so well, a wild landscape that was the setting for her incandescent poetry, and her only published novel, Wuthering Heights. Brontë’s strange and powerful imagination – considered so transgressive by Victorian critics that her work fell out of favour until the 20th century – might seem too filled with gothic darkness to be the starting point for a summer story; and her early death from tuberculosis, in the winter of 1848, casts a long shadow over the legend of her life. Yet whenever I return to Emily Brontë’s poetry – and indeed, to the parsonage in Haworth where she grew up with her siblings, and the path…

HELEN JUKES On page 55, the author and tutor of creative writing at Oxford University describes how keeping bees at the end of her garden opened her eyes to the wonderful wildlife in the city. Her first book, A Honeybee Heart Has Five Openings, is published in July. The perfect spot for a picnic ‘A sheltered rock on a blustery hill, midway through a rambling walk.’ Your favourite county ‘Pembrokeshire. The wild Welsh coast.’ The best thing you have ever made from a hedgerow forage ‘Meadowsweet mead brewed with the last of the honey harvested from my beehive.’ LINNÉA AARFLOT ‘I see dressage as an art form,’ says the Swedish rider (right) as she poses with Caruso the horse on page 92. Aarflot grew up in Stockholm and worked at two Olympic dressage…

what to wear

MASTERPIECE £ LONDON A blank canvas has no place at this art-collectors’ haven in the capital Be your very own work of art by embracing colour and print: too much isn’t enough here so look to Dior polka-dots, Givenchy graphic stripes and Gucci logo mania to ensure you make an impression… if necessary, all at once. A bold Chanel box bag, a felt beret and striking Manolo slides give elegance a creative spin. HAMPTON COURT PALACE FLOWER SHOW Mix horticulture with haute couture to be as pretty as a picture Opt for outfit choices that reflect the botanical beauty on display: bloom like an English rose in Erdem’s floor-length gown or Emilia Wickstead’s feminine rose-printed tea dress. As for accessories: consider Gucci’s floral lace-ups, add a Louis Vuitton scarf and then gild the lily with…

FLOWERS RINGS OF ROSES Lessons in floral fine art For the past two years, Worm London’s romantic floral arrangements have decorated many a T&C jewellery shoot, with Katie Smyth and Terri Chandler fashioning all manner of fantastical items, including cascading walls of flowers and delicate adornments wrought from the tiniest of rosebuds. Their first book, Wreaths, has a broader scope than the title might suggest – it’s a step-by-step guide to creating unusual-looking statement pieces using seasonal foliage and blooms, from garlic garlands to floating ‘chandeliers’ of late-summer berries. CG ‘Wreaths’ by Katie Smyth and Terri Chandler (£14.99, Quadrille) is out now. PETS PAW PRINTS Camera-ready canines Dogs have long been championed in art, and this captivating new book brings together iconic portraits, from a childhood picture of Her Majesty the Queen with a beloved corgi to…
