editor’s letter

There are those who say that a British winter is not to be taken lightly, and I understand why: the darkening days, the long nights, the ferocious storms that batter this island realm. But I have come to realise that the season brings its own joys: the chance to walk – or ride – along the silvery sands of a windswept beach, without the crowds of the summer months; the opportunity to gather friends and family together for a candlelit feast; the myriad pleasures of the solstice celebrations. For, whatever one’s faith, we all find ways to mark the turning of the year, and to seek meaning and magic in the darkness. My own rituals, which have developed over several decades, include bringing the outdoors in, with garlands of holly, ivy and…

contributors – winter 2018

ROSE CHOLMONDELEY On page 142, the Marchioness of Cholmondeley speaks fondly about the experience of sitting for a portrait by Phoebe Dickinson. The work will join pieces by Gainsborough and Sargent in the historic art collection at her home, Houghton Hall. What do you love most about winter? ‘Watching starlings murmurate – they do it every year near us and it never fails to amaze me.’ How do you decorate your Christmas tree? ‘With the children, while carols blast in the background – though I can’t help changing it all once they have gone to bed.’ Your hopes for 2019 ‘Health and happiness for my friends and family, and new adventures.’ EMILIA WICKSTEAD The fashion designer (below), whose clients include Samantha Cameron and the Duchess of Cambridge, shares her secrets for the perfect…

prince louis’s first christmas

Conjure up the spirit of Christmas in the most delightful way with traditional toys and an outfit to match: Trotters’ knitted romper will suit any little prince. Chloé’s magnificent scarlet dress will please junior princesses, while Dior’s sparkly shoes would satisfy even the Sugar Plum Fairy. For those in search of a suitable gift, Tiffany’s silver rattle won’t look out of place under even the grandest of trees. a highland hogmanay

With a Scottish castle as a backdrop, your outfit requires grandeur – as well, perhaps, as thermal underwear hidden beneath its skirts. Dior can always be relied on for extravagance, and this fabulous floor-sweeping tulle gown is no exception; the more modern-minded may opt for theatrically feathered Miu Miu instead. Embrace tradition with Manolo Blahnik’s tartan kitten heels, which are perfect for dancing in the New Year. PHOTOGRAPHS: AGATA POSPIESZYNSKA, REX/SHUTTERSTOCK, PIXELATE. SEE STOCKISTSFOR DETAILS.…

skiing at megève

Dragging decades-old salopettes out of the attic won’t cut it here: in order to look sleek on these slopes you need to reach for fashion’s big guns. That’s Chanel and Fendi, who balance style and substance with activewear that won’t compromise your skills. The devil’s in the detail when it comes to après ski – accessorise Brunello Cucinelli’s caramel cashmere with a flurry of Bucherer gems. chinese new year

Opulence is the key word here: auspicious red should be your colour of choice, with ruby Dolce & Gabbana velvets or an adorned brocade coat that’s evocative of Chinese art. Accessories pile on the glamour – metallic filigree Manolo Blahnik slippers, perhaps, or Bulgari’s earrings, which pay delightful homage to the pagoda. For those requiring extra drama, Ralph & Russo’s gleaming lamé gown will shine beautifully under illuminated lanterns.
