editor’s letter

Perhaps because my birthday is in June, I have always associated midsummer with parties and pleasure; although I am now well past the age of thinking that I should be at the centre of the celebrations. Instead, I enjoy the revels associated with the Season: from the Chelsea Flower Show to the Cartier polo, Glyndebourne opera to Glorious Goodwood. And I have grown to love the distinctively British ability to delight in these and other occasions, whatever the weather; brandishing umbrellas at village fêtes, or dancing in the downpours at Glastonbury. Indeed, it may be the unpredictability of our island climate that makes a British summer so cherished; when the sun comes out, so do we, but even if the sky darkens, the show must go on. And as an ardent…

contributors – summer 2019

JACQUELINE WILSON The much-loved children’s author has inspired generations of readers with her evocative, heartfelt stories, selling more than 40 million books in the UK; her latest, Dancing the Charleston, is out now. As a new anthology of lost Noel Streatfeild tales is published, she pays tribute to the writer’s timeless talent on page 61. A scenic countryside walk ‘I love walking on the South Downs, where sheep munch meditatively in the fields and the sea sparkles in the distance.’ Polo, the Proms or Pimm’s in the park? ‘Definitely Pimm’s in the park. Or champagne in the meadow. Or gin and tonic in the garden.’ A summer read you return to ‘All five volumes of The Cazalet Chronicles.’ KAREN SPENCER Alongside her role as chatelaine of the Althorp estate – the Spencer family’s…

glyndebourne opera

Is there a more charming way to see an opera than in the great outdoors on a balmy summer evening? Such an occasion calls for sensuous silk and extravagant embroidery: try Ralph Lauren’s billowing black and white halterneck gown and a dramatically detailed clutch bag by Fregoli. Fortnum & Mason’s picnic hamper makes dining alfresco an indulgent affair, while Cartier’s exquisitely embellished binoculars will ensure you access all arias… PHOTOGRAPHS: RICHARD PHIBBS, GUY GRAVETT/GLYNDEBOURNE PRODUCTIONS LTD/ARENAPAL,GETTY IMAGES, PIXELATE. glastonbury festival

Feathers and frills, denim and diamanté… Glastonbury is its own hedonistic style haven. Master the rakish rock-star look with tie-dye jeans and bright bohemian bracelets, then add a pair of round Seventies-style sunglasses in tribute to the festival’s origins, plus a thoroughly modern cream leather Gucci backpack. Wellington boots are essential, whatever the era, but these Dior lace-ups might be too chic to spatter with mud, so reserve them for the stage. PHOTOGRAPHS: JOSH SHINNER, GETTY IMAGES, PIXELATE. the glorious twelfth

When packing for one’s first foray up to the grouse moors, there are no finer footsteps to follow in than those of the Queen Mother, who grew up in Scotland: a pleated, peaty-brown kilt from Gucci provides warmth, camouflage and the freedom to stride over the Highland heather. A mid-morning nip from Ettinger’s hipflask should put bounce in said step, and William & Son’s seat stick will prove invaluable, if you run out of steam at the top of the glen. henley regatta

For an event such as Henley, choose boating style that doesn’t go overboard. Offset classic naval hues of blue and white with accessories in bold shades of red: opt for Dolce & Gabbana’s scarlet-trim bag and a burgundy tie from William & Son, then add a touch of military dash with gilded buttons. The dress code may decree that straw hats are optional, but consider this Lock & Co boater non-negotiable.
