editor’s letter

As the global success of Downton Abbey and The Crown suggests, Britishness is as much a state of mind as an island state; a semi-imaginary landscape, shaped by tradition, tolerance and a tendency to turn first to tea, rather than tanks, in times of crisis. At this point, the United Kingdom is still divided by Brexit; yet for all the bitter disagreements over our divorce from Europe, certain consistencies prevail. ‘The maxim of the British people is “Business as usual”’, observed Winston Churchill in 1914; and more than a century later, whatever the storms that may lie ahead, the truism endures. We will carry on talking about the Royal Family, as if they were our own kith and kin; while remaining devoted to race horses and roses, dachshunds and dahlias,…

contributors – autumn 2019

PAM CORBIN Fondly known as ‘Pam the Jam’, Corbin is an expert on the art of preserving, having published two cookery books on the subject and run her own small jam company in East Devon for many years. On page 88, she shares her recipe for the perfect raspberry jam. Autumn has arrived when… ‘the quinces are fragrant and canary-yellow, and I can light the fire.’ A delicious seasonal meal ‘Slow-cooked short ribs of beef with Pontack [elderberry] sauce, served with peppery parsnip mash and finely sliced Brussels sprouts and leeks.’ A beautiful autumnal walk ‘From Stonebarrow to Golden Cap along Dorset’s beautiful Jurassic coastline, with my basket to gather crab apples, sloes, hips, haws and blackberries.’ LORD SHAFTESBURY The 12th Earl of Shaftesbury was obliged to abandon a career in the New York music scene when the sudden…

archie’sfirst royal tour

A Royal walkabout, or rather a crawlabout, on the plains of southern Africa requires careful dress diplomacy. Pay homage to the resident King of the Beasts in Baby Dior’s jumper, worn with matching safari shorts, and ward off the sun with a smart headscarf (a look championed by Great-Granny herself) or bonnet. It’s important to be accompanied by a loyal retinue: we suggest an elephant, or at the very least, a regal mouse. PHOTOGRAPHS: GETTY IMAGES, PIXELATE.COMPILED BY HOLLY GORST. blenheim horse trials

Equine experts such as the Princess Royal know that crisp shirts and elements of tailoring will take you from dressage ring to drinks at the Pavilion in style – look to Loro Piana or Holland & Holland for chic check jackets and elevate your ensemble with gold bangles from Dior and Louis Vuitton. Following the eventers cross-country requires the comfiest of boots too, so trot over to Fairfax & Favor or Purdey to help you stay the course. PHOTOGRAPHS: PHILIP SINDEN, GETTY IMAGES,PIXELATE. goodwood revival

Take pole position at the Revival with vintage-inspired silhouettes and poised accessories – Emilia Wickstead’s sunny dress will make this a cinch when paired with Dior’s Bar jacket and Aspinal’s hat-box bag. A sprinkling of Chaumet diamonds shifts things up a gear, but ensure any pit-stops on the lawn remain effortless with a pair of low heels. Gucci’s elegant mules deserve a lap of honour for being fabulous as well as functional. PHOTOGRAPHS: TOM KUBLIN, HARRY CORY WRIGHT, GETTY IMAGES, PIXELATE.COMPILED BY SOPHIE CHAPMAN.
