1977 TIME AND ESSENC “This is one of my favorite photographs of them,” Aerin Lauder says of this portrait of her grandparents, Joseph and Estée Lauder, taken for T&C ’s October 1977 issue. “She loved wearing red, and this epitomizes timeless elegance.” The couple, who founded the Estée Lauder company in 1946, invited T&C into their NYC townhouse for a story on Devin, Estée’s latest cologne for men. “I wanted to create a new fragrance that would give a man confidence,” she said. “If you have confidence, you can do anything.”…

what lee radziwill taught me

We knew Lee best. She became part of the Town & Country family through her great friend, our contributing editor Alejandra Cicognani. I learned of her death on Saturday, February 16, and we all smoked Vogue cigarettes and drank Domaines Ott rosé that night in her honor and toasted her, an exquisite beauty, an exceptional wit, and a witness to history. The visionary Karl Lagerfeld died just a few days later, and by the end of the week Marella Agnelli, the style icon we had called the Last Swan, died at home in Italy. Some people like to say that everyone is replaceable. Simply not true. mr. & mrs. chow invite you

Love in an elevator is more than just an Aerosmith hit from the 1980s. According to the artist and restaurateur Michael Chow, it’s also exactly what he found with Vanessa Rano while paying a visit to their mutual nerve specialist in Beverly Hills about two years ago. “It’s fate, kind of,” says Rano, who received a master’s in social work from Cal State Fullerton in July. During their initial encounter, “he was very cool at first,” she recalls. “I didn’t even know he was Mr. Chow. We just started talking, and he told me about his art.” They ran into each other again immediately after their doctor’s appointments at Go Greek, a yogurt shop next door on North Bedford Drive. “It was love at first sight, from my point of view,” Chow…

onassis slept here

The usual Greek itinerary has long been: two days in Athens at the Hotel Grande Bretagne, to see the Acropolis, maybe with a daytrip to Delphi, where the famous oracle presided. And then it would be off, by ferry or plane, to some combination of islands. But this is changing with the recent opening of the Four Seasons Astir Palace on the Athenian Riviera, the 35-mile stretch of coast between the city and the temple of Poseidon on Cape Sounio, to the south. It is close enough to central Athens (30 minutes by car, 10 by helicopter) that you can base yourself there and forgo staying in Athens altogether. And its setting, on a pine-clad promontory that juts into the Saronic Gulf, might just give the Aegean islands a run for…
