hello!

(COVER PHOTO: REX) I hate changing doctors. I loved my last GP – he very possibly saved my wife’s life when she had an undiagnosed (by someone else) blood clot in her leg after giving birth – but surely even much-loved  medics have a right to retire. So, I was very sad when our own Woman’s Weekly doctor, Melanie Wynne-Jones, announced that she, too, was finally retiring from the hurly-burly of both patients and pen – Mel’s been a wonderful fixture in these pages for many years and we wish her every happiness in her retirement. However, we’re thrilled to have found such a sympathetic and caring replacement in Dr Gill Jenkins; look out for her on page 30. I’m already hoping she’ll stay with us as long as Mel…

come on inside!

Why the long face? My brother has recently moved to Tavistock, which means plenty of opportunities for me to visit this lovely part of the country. We snapped a picture of this pretty pony while out walking on Dartmoor recently – she was clearly having a bad-hair day. We all know how that feels! Barbara Trevitt, Newcastle upon Tyne Paws for thought Here’s Tilly, our miniature dachshund, enjoying a delicious treat. Karen Welch, Warrington ✿ Got a pet pic that makes you smile? We can give it a good home Family heirloom I was interested to read your recent article about unusual family heirlooms. I thought you might like to see mine. It’s an asparagus…

in the garden this week

TI-MEDIACONTENT.COM ✿ PLANT LAVENDER so that on hot sunny days, from now until August, the sunbaked leaves and spiky flowers emit their intoxicating fragrance. Ideally, plant them along the edge of a path or around your favourite seat, so that when you brush by, the scent is released. ✿ FILL BASKETS AND CONTAINERS with strawberry plants that are already bulging with ripening fruit. Keep them well watered while the fruits are swelling and introduce an organic liquid strawberry feed to give them plenty of stamina to perform. ✿ IF YOU’RE A VEGETARIAN OR VEGAN, it makes sense to grow your own veggies. You’ll need to eat beans and pulses, which are a good source of protein. Partner with herbs like thyme, basil and mint, which help repel pests…

meet our club!

London’s Koruso! choir ✿ Sharon Sweeney, South LondonI joined Koruso! choir last autumn – the name means ‘chorus’ in Esperanto. I was looking for a choir with a wide repertoire that performs regularly and liked the fact that Koruso! aims to unite people and celebrate cultural diversity. Our director is Andrew Tait (in the back row of this photo with his arms outstretched), who teaches us a wonderfully diverse range of songs, from Schubert to show tunes, jazz to folk, and lots more in between. Andrew is both rigorous and fun – we start with all-important vocal warm-ups, then he guides us through songs new and old. It’s always joyful and we all leave with a smile on our lips and a song in our hearts. There are…

you wore it well

Ann Dunsden, 1954 This photo was taken at Whitecliff Bay on the Isle of Wight. I am second on the left and my husband is far right. I was wearing white cotton tennis shorts. The other photo is of my granddaughter, Hannah, wearing my shorts. Her mother and aunt also wore them. So they’re still looking good after 64 years! We’d love to see how great you looked in any era up to and including the 1980s. Please send a good-quality photo with your name, address and daytime phone number clearly written on the back, to: Fashion Dept, Woman’s Weekly, 161 Marsh Wall, London E14 9AP. Photos will be returned.…

what you’re wearing

Paula Wechsler, 34 Tell us about your look… My silky kimono- style top is from TK Maxx. I like a splash of colour or a bold print and this was a great find. My black top and trainers are from Zara and my pleated, wide-leg trousers are from Italy. My sister lives there, so I usually buy a lot of clothes when I visit her. I love accessories and my bag and belt were bought in Italy. I always wear quite bold, statement jewellery. And the best bit of your body? I’d say my eyes. Sarah Auclair, 60 Tell us about your look… I love jumpsuits and boilersuits – it’s all I ever wear! This one is by Louise Markey,…
