boat insurance premiums expected to increase by 30%

Yacht insurers are predicting that over the next three years the cost of premiums for UK yacht insurance could rise by at least 30%. Those wanting to race regularly, or sail further afield across the Atlantic to the Caribbean can also expect to pay much higher premiums, and it is unlikely that blue water cruisers will get named storm cover. A number of factors are being blamed for the hike including years of low premiums as a result of increased competition brought about by investment in the insurance market and Lloyd’s of London syndicates. This resulted in premiums falling to unprofitable and unsustainable levels. north sea container warning

A warning has been issued to sailors after one of the world’s largest container ships, MSC Zoe, lost 281 containers in the North Sea. The incident happened overnight on 1-2 January 2019 in 10-metre seas as the 400-metre long vessel made its way through the Wadden Sea. Some of the containers, and the goods inside them, washed up in the Frisian Islands. Most were carrying car parts, toys and furniture. Three of them contained chemicals. Both the Dutch and German coastguards were initially involved in the operation to locate the containers. The owner of MSC Zoe, the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has agreed to cover the full cost of the clean-up and has committed to continue searching until the last container is found. 75 2018 marked the 75th anniversary of the Swedish boatyard Hallberg-Rassy. Harry Hallberg started the family-run firm in 1943 before he retired in 1972 and sold the yard to Christoph Rassy. It was renamed Hallberg-Rassy, and since then has built and delivered 9,400 yachts. 2 The two floodgates at Queenborough Harbour in north Kent have been replaced as part of the Environment Agency’s £2.5 million scheme to improve harbour defences. Golden Globe Race favourite, Jean-Luc Van Den Heede is expected to cross the finish line in France by the end of January 2019. At the time YM went to press, the French skipper was less than 2,000 miles from completing the race, closely pursued by Dutch sailor Mark Slats, who was just 250 miles behind. Both men are racing in Rustler 36 yachts, but Van Den Heede’s Matmut has a smaller rig and a damaged mast, while Slats’ Open Maverick has a taller mast and bigger headsails. Van Den Heede has led for much of the race. He has also had to make repairs to his mast after Matmut pitchpoled in the Southern Ocean, resulting in damage to the mast’s through-bolt attachment which connects all four lower shrouds. mandatory co alarms introduced

From 1 April 2019, sailors using some of the UK’s harbours and waterways will have to fit a carbon monoxide alarm on their boat. The new regulation follows a public consultation by the Boat Safety Scheme (BSS) and will affect those cruising the Scottish Canals, BWML marinas, Bristol Harbour, all Canal & River Trust waterways, The Broads, the rivers Medway, Thames, Blackwater, Chelmer, Cam, Dee, Wey, and other waterways run by BSS-regulated navigation authorities.
