the joy of holiday cooking

WHEN I THINK OF FOOD, I think of family. When I was growing up, cooking was mostly a means to get us fed and out the door. But during the holidays, it turned into a group activity. My extended family would arrive with potluck dishes in their arms; my aunts cooked in the kitchen with my mom, while the rest of us pitched in by setting the table and doing the dishes. Those unrushed evenings when we joined together as one family around the dinner table are among my happiest memories. Cooking together is one of our oldest human traditions, dating to the advent of fire. My parents grew up eating home-cooked meals, because in the 1950s there weren’t many alternatives. Now many of us depend on takeout or delivery and…

life-changing lofoten

Becoming a surf photographer and working on some of the most beautiful beaches in the world would be a dream job for most people, but Chris Burkard yearned for more. More challenge. More thrill. More connection. His thirst for adventure led him across the turbulent waters of the Norwegian Sea, far above the Arctic Circle, to Norway’s Lofoten Islands. This rare wilderness outpost brims with majestic mountains, deep fjords, otherworldly beauty—and the power to change your life. Getting There: Visitors arrive in Lofoten by plane, ferry or car to explore picturesque fishing villages and remote bays. If you’re looking for an authentic experience, stay in a rorbu, a traditional fisherman’s cabin updated with modern conveniences. Many can be found on Airbnb. Call of the Wild: Located off the northwest coast of Norway,…

dressed to express

Find yourself in Brazzaville, the laid-back capital of the Republic of the Congo, on a typically balmy day, and you might browse the marketplace in Poto Poto, lunch on pondu at a malewa stall—or get swept up in a distinctively Congolese street-set fashion show known as a sapeur procession. Sapeurs embody a lifestyle called la sape (La Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes), with roots in early-20th-century colonial Congo. At that time in the French-occupied country, many Congolese workers were paid in fabric and used clothes, and they’d transform those “wages” into bespoke ensembles. During World War II, Congolese men were recruited in large numbers by the French military. Soldiers were heavily influenced by French fashion; when they brought those influences back to Brazzaville, la sape crystallized into a regional…
