“The first long-distance footpath I ever attempted was the Offa’s Dyke Path. One autumn, with my now-wife, I tried to walk the entire 177-mile route in two weeks, camping on the way. Well, after 14 days we staggered to Kington, about halfway. We’d overpacked (did I really need that spare pair of shoes? Or two saucepans?) and each day was a slog. But my goodness, I’ve never forgotten the beauty of that walk: the tranquil hills, rivers thronging with life, goldening woodlands and welcome inns at the day’s end. And there is more of the dyke – the huge rampart – than you’d expect, which adds a poignant history to every step. october in the country

TRUE COLOURS Autumnal leaves in a riot of rich rusts, deep ochres and vivid golds frame the spectacular Falls of Clyde in Lanarkshire, Scotland. These vibrant shades are the leaves’ hidden colours; when summer sunlight fades, trees gradually stop producing chlorophyll, a chemical that gives leaves their green pigment and helps them absorb sunlight. The carotenoid pigments of yellow, orange and red that are always present in leaves are then able to shine through. the seasonal table: a taste of october

Autumn is here. Leaves need raking and barrowing to the mulching cage. Seasoned wood is emptied from logstores and brought inside for the fire. We give the vegetable patch a tidy: soggy, frost-hit nasturtiums and withered courgette stems are cleared, brassicas are checked for covert caterpillars and winter salad crops are thinned. There is a hotchpotch of apples to press and pears to harvest by the basketful. Wild mushrooms are also ready to gather, so to the woodland we go. Say this phrase on harvesting your first conker of the season and good fortune will come your way for the rest of the year. Produced by the stately horse chestnut tree, these lustrous, mahogany seeds are a valuable source of food for deer and other mammals in autumn, but they also serve another purpose: they are the pendulum in the traditional children’s game of conkers.
