hello

Motorcycles are extraordinary machines. This month 1 have enjoyed the white knuckle 2oobhp thrust of a Kawasaki ZH2 and the cosseting heated seat of the new BMW R1250GS 40th Year Edition. But while extraordinary performance and laugh-at-winter technology are very impressive, it’s as memory generation devices that motorcycles really excel, and for that you don’t need a supercharger or adaptive headlights, though I’d strongly recommend a test ride on the Kawasaki to anyone in search of life experiences. Bikes turn mundane journeys into a lifeaffirming joy, inspire adventures of self-discovery and challenges of skill and stamina. All you need is a motorcycle and a small sense of adventure to make the ride of a lifetime, whether you’re headed for Siberia, Silverstone or, like the cheery Bike team in the picture, Wensleydale. This…

easy tiger

‘Aimed at less experienced riders considering BMW’s F750GS’ Confusingly, Triumph’s new Tiger 850 Sport is neither an 850 or especially sporty or related to the 1050 Sport. But don’t let any of that put you off – at £9300 it looks like being the best value Tiger in the range. It replaces the base model 900 Tiger, and it’s effectively the same bike with a detuned engine, LElights, a big colour dash, and new graphics. Like the Tiger 900GT and Rally, the 850 Sport’s engine has the new T-plane crank configuration and a capacity of 888cc, but power is down from 94bhp (a) 875orpm to 84bhp @ 85oorpm. That drop is thanks to electronic twiddling – there’s no difference in the engine components. Torque falls from 64 Ib.ft (а) 7250rpm to 60…

10 new things about the zx-10r

With six consecutive World Superbike championships under their big green belt, it’s not surprising Kawasaki’s race team played a central role in most of the updates to this new ZX-10R – either asking for changes they need to win again, or handing over the innovations they employed to keep Mr Rea on top. But there are a few nods to road riders too – the first three gears are lower to help mask the ZX-10R’s weaker bottom-end thrust compared with rivals, there’s a full colour TFT dash and you even get cruise control as standard. Kawasaki’s Martin Lambert: ‘Apart from the winglets you have to look at the detail to see the changes. That is a typical Kawasaki engineering approach – everything has been proven to work. It hasn’t been devised by…

barking!

If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if a mahogany drinks cabinet got frisky with a 1950s Moto Guzzi Grand Prix bike, here is your answer: James Hay’s wooden Suzuki DL650. ‘I wanted to give the V-Strom some better weather protection,’ says James, 73. I’d seen this car that I really liked in a museum but unfortunately 1 don’t have the funds to buy an Hispano Suiza Tulipwood so 1 thought I’d build something that looked like it. One thing led to another and 1 just got carried away.’ He’s not kidding. The fairing is built like a sailing boat, with dozens of ribs forming the shape, and then tiny planks laid longitudinally. ‘It’s made from a wood called clear pine – 1 stained it to look like mahogany. The ribs are…

rebel with a cause...

This is Honda’s new Rebel 11oo, the company’s first custom that could legitimately challenge Harley’s big-selling Sportster 1200. The new Rebel isn’t a V-twin though – it’s powered by the 1084.cc parallel twin motor from the latest Africa Twin. The new model is due in UK dealers in March. Japanese customs often get sneered at but the Rebel 500 – same style, smaller engine – is a big seller. In Italy and Germany it outsold the Suzuki V-Strom 650, BMW F850GS and Ducati Multistrada 1260 in 2019. In the UK it’s the biggest selling major manufacturer custom. Honda say they want to pick up sales from Rebel 500 owners looking to upgrade, but there’s also a chance they’ll nab a few customers who might have been considering a Harley – the entry-level…

the thinker’s loon

‘I want to ride twisties. If I want to go fast in a straight line I use a train’ Given that the new S1000R’s engine comes from the latest 207bhp S1000RR, BMW could easily have made it rival hypernakeds such as Ducati’s 208bhp Ducati Streetfighter V4. But they didn’t. Instead, BMW kept the power at the old model’s 165hР and gave the new one an even wider spread of torque, the R1250RS headlight, a new slimmer frame and all the latest electronics. They pared 6.5kg off too, getting weight down to a class-leading 199kg wet. Though the absence of 200bhp will put off buyers desperate to win pub bragging contests, the decision makes sense, and not just because it meant BMW could use the same engine as the S1000XR. Project leader Max Renko:…
