Fuel prices are much in the news lately. As markets around the world react to the appalling actions of Russia in Ukraine, oil prices are rising fast and fuel supply is becoming constrained. For New Zealanders, that translates to pain at the fuel pump and marina bowser, something the Government has tried to address in the short term by reducing the excise tax on fuel. This will certainly provide some relief, but with war in Ukraine raging and international sanctions on Russia tightening, oil prices look set to keep rising. Any benefits of the lower tax may soon be swallowed by higher international fuel prices. Higher fuel prices are not good news for boaties, or anyone else for that matter. The Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust Endurance22 Expedition has located the wreck of Endurance, Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ship which has not been seen since it was crushed by the ice and sank in the Weddell Sea in 1915. One hundred years after Shackleton’s death, Endurance was found at a depth of 3,008m in the Weddell Sea, within the search area defined by the expedition team before its departure from Cape Town, and approximately four miles south of the position originally recorded by Endurance’s New Zealand captain, Frank Worsley. The team worked from the South African polar research and logistics vessel, S.A. Agulhas II, owned by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment and under Master, Capt. New York Yacht Club American Magic, the U.S. sailing team challenging for the 37th America’s Cup, confirmed the core sailing team roster. Tom Burnham joins American Magic as Head Coach. Tom has sailed with Young America, and twice with the Italian Team Luna Rossa. He was the head coach of the Swedish America’s Cup Challenger Artemis Racing in the 35th America’s Cup and is also currently the coach for the Australian SailGP team. LUCAS CALABRESE achieved an Olympic Medal in London 2012 competing in the 470 class. Lucas has won three World Championships: Melges 20 Worlds, J70 Worlds and Optimist Worlds. Emirates Team New Zealand’s core sailing team consists of six key sailors. Skipper Peter Burling is joined by Blair Tuke, Andy Maloney, Nathan Outteridge, Glenn Ashby and Josh Junior, whose focus will be on the performance and development of the boat, along with strategical decision making during the 37th America’s Cup. The European Inland Waterways Section of the Cruising Association (CA) has published a new comprehensive guide for yachts planning to reach the Mediterranean through the inland waterways, entitled Through France via the Inland Waterways. The guide, which is available in both print and downloadable PDF formats, also incorporates over 100 hyperlinks to port, marina, boatyard and other websites for readers using the guide online. In the digital PDF version, CA members can additionally benefit from further hyperlinks to the CA’s proprietary CAptain’s Mate app for the very latest updates on the various mooring locations. The Sydney International Boat Show (SIBS) returns from 28 July to 1 August 2022 at the International Convention Centre (ICC) Sydney and Cockle Bay within the iconic surrounds of Darling Harbour.
