The Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show came to a successful conclusion last Sunday, and as I write, Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, arguably the Southern Hemisphere’s largest, has just opened with 300 exhibitors and over 600 boats. Sydney International Boat Show is scheduled for the end of July. It was gratifying to see so many Kiwis thronging the exhibition halls and outside displays at Greenlane Showgrounds last weekend. Interesting, too, to note how few of the visitors wore masks, though most of the exhibitors did – some of the time, at least… I believe the term is ‘response fatigue’ and we’re all suffering from it – people are simply over Covid and the many restrictions the pandemic imposed on daily lives, including wearing masks. The sight of Emirates Team New Zealand’s (ETNZ) hydrogen-powered chase boat Chase Zero whizzing past us a couple of weeks ago took me quite by surprise. Firstly, I didn’t hear it coming and secondly, while it didn’t appear to be moving particularly fast, it foiled away from us so quickly it was soon out of sight. A couple of weeks later I had the opportunity to experience this revolutionary all-carbon vessel first-hand, joining other journalists at ETNZ’s Viaduct base for an on-water demonstration. With (comfortable) seating for six, there was room inside the futuristic looking catamaran for four journos and two ETNZ representatives, including our skipper Chris ‘Curly’ Salthouse and Chase Zero Operations Coordinator Nick Burridge. The 330 Scandinavia is a development of the Marex 375 and 360 CC models, scaled down to a 33-foot (10m) hull. The 360 CC is itself a BOB award winner (2019) and we were able to briefly compare the two boats side by side in Whitianga Waterways while conducting our review of the 330 SCA. It’s fair to say the 330 doesn’t give a lot away in terms of utility or specification to its larger sibling, though of course it remains a smaller vessel. The Boating NZ team travelled to Pauanui on the Coromandel Peninsula to join Marex agents Richard and Suzy Wardenburg aboard the first 330 SCA in New Zealand.
