Two Austin Sevens in Torquay on the first RAC Rally in 1932, having traversed 1000 miles from London – going by the ‘UW’ registration of BE Appleyard’s Seven – to contest three tricky tests on the seafront. First, drive for 100 yards as slowly as possible, then as quickly as possible, and ending with a brake test. Fluid-transmission cars reigned, with a Lanchester top of Class 1 but all manner of trophies were on offer – none of which were won by this pair, it seems. The event passed around various seaside resorts until WW2 and before it gained international grading in 1951. That was year dot for the modern incarnation, which celebrated its 75th running in October and was cause to delve into the photographic archives (p142).…

There are times, I will admit, when we are guilty of taking this life for granted. A particularly tough press week, for example, or another fight with the powers that be about how many pages we can have. But there are also days when we have to acknowledge just how lucky we are to do this job. Thousands of classic enthusiasts descended on the historic Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne from 11-13 October to celebrate the great and the good of the Australian classic car scene as Motorclassica, the Australian International Concours d’Elegance & Classic Motor Show, marked its 10th birthday. The anniversary event kicked off in fine style with a parade of 70 vehicles that began at the beautiful Alexander Gardens and made its way to the show venue via Melbourne’s central business district. A dazzling array of curated displays, many marking significant brand milestones, awaited tour participants. Among them was a special tribute to the Japanese car industry organised by Nissan, with several Z-cars complementing a display to mark the 50th anniversary of the original Skyline and 30 years since the introduction of the R32 GTR. aston lands best in show

Anna Purcell’s 1959 Aston Martin DB MkIII won the judges’ approval in what must have been one of the most fiercely contested Australian International Concours d’Elegance of recent years. Purcell’s Aston is a true rarity – one of just 551 MkIIIs produced, and one of only two to be finished in Primrose Yellow – making it a worthy recipient of an exhaustive restoration that began in 2015. Under the guidance of Alan How of Creative Custom Cars, the Aston underwent a nut-and-bolt rebuild, with the restoration team poring over thousands of photographs to ensure that each detail was finished to factory specifications. “The standard of entries continues to exceed our expectations,” said event director Paul Mathers. “This is the second time in Motorclassica’s 10-year history that an Aston Martin has won the…

One of the most anticipated features of Motorclassica is the annual ‘Club Sandwich’ display, which takes place not in the show halls, but in a special concours arena adjacent to the Royal Exhibition Building. This year’s celebration of the Australian car-club scene was presented in association with C&SC, as part of the magazine’s ongoing commitment to the club movement and ahead of the UK-based Classic & Sports Car Club Awards, due to take place at the NEC Birmingham in November. Some 25 clubs laid on a colossal revolving display of classics over the weekend, with 210 cars on show each day, highlighting the breadth and depth of the country’s automotive passion. benz beats bugatti in portugal

Félix Machin’s rakish 1937 Mercedes-Benz 320 Cabriolet A Special emerged victorious at the Estoril Classics concours d’elegance from 11-13 October. The Benz wowed the judges in Portugal to collect the Best of Show prize, edging out stiff competition that included Preservation Award winner Jaap Braam Rueben’s 1929 Bugatti Type 43A. On the coastal road run around Cascais, Rueben piloted a 1925 Hispano-Suiza H6C Torpedo – a remarkable machine that weighs ‘just’ 2000kg despite its elephantine proportions and was originally owned by notorious master criminal Alves dos Reis. Another car with significant Portuguese history was Dr Will Leimer’s 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing.
