Diesel Power

December 2019

The magazine shows owners what's on the market to improve their trucks' engine, transmission, and driveline. Diesel Power also shows prospective new truck buyers the newest light trucks with diesel engines and catalogs their performance. Diesel engine technology, motorhome engine upgrades, "diesel drags", "dyno days", and towing are all part of the package as well.

KJones@enthusiastnetwork.com FOR ANY “writer,” especially professionals—people who put proverbial pen to paper for a living—not knowing what or how to “say” something is never a good thing. Each month, my colleagues at Diesel Power and I, as well as scribes at other publications that cover diesels, are charged with “finding the right words” to describe trucks, engines, events, and all other aspects of the hobby. While doing this is never really easy, thankfully, we usually manage to produce some type of content for you to read. As editor of this brand, one aspect of my job is to give Tech Editor John Lehenbauer and our regular freelance contributors their writing assignments—basically, let them know what they need to write about. And, of course, I also have my own writing responsibilities (I have…

3.0L FORD DIESEL SUPPORT Superchips’ Flashpaq and Dashpaq now support the Ford F-150 3.0L Power Stroke diesel engine. The two programmers can provide a performance increase of up to 53 hp and 128 lb-ft of torque, and they give owners the ability to manage tire/gear options as well as engine auto start-stop. Furthermore, Dashpaq adds additional digital in-cab monitoring of different vehicle functions. The valve helps maintain fuel-rail pressure during high engine loads to eliminate potential low-rail-pressure situations that occur from insufficient spring pressure in the valve. how old is your vehicle?

THE AVERAGE AGE of light vehicles on the road today? The answer is 11.8 years, according to IHS Markit, and it has increased over 2018’s figure. “This acceleration of average age can easily be seen when looking across the last 17 years. From 2002-2007, the average age of light vehicles in the U.S. increased by 3.5 percent. From 2008-2013, however, the gain was 12.2 percent. The average-age increase has returned to its more traditional rate—aging by 4 percent since 2014,” a company spokesman says. Factors include improved quality and technology. U.S. vehicles also set an operational record—more than 278 million—and that’s an increase of more than 5.9 million over 2018. It was also noted that vehicle age is increasing at different rates across the U.S., mainly due to demand for…

rotary diesel

BUILDING A DIESEL engine that does not use traditional pistons may seem odd, but in today’s modern age of high efficiency, low emissions, and weight reduction, an engine with a nonconventional rotor may be the key to things to come. A compression-ignition rotary powerplant is not a new concept; the idea dates back to around the same period when the first Wankel rotary gas engine was developed (Felix Wankel’s first working prototype was 1957). Sharing a basic design with its gas brethren, the Wankel diesel powerplant uses a triangular-like rotor in an oval epitrochoid-shaped housing. This design offers the proposition of an efficient engine with low mass and smooth operation. The problem that has kept the engine from coming to fruition is the design of the Wankel rotary’s combustion chamber, which is…
