Of all the pleasures we’re looking forward to, though, this one might be the hardest to pin down a date for. As an artist on that game, he helped shape an entire island, modelling ruins and planting carefully-chosen vegetation to create one of the most memorable locations in videogames. In his new game, his first as lead designer, he’s working on a much smaller canvas. Twelve Minutes takes place in and around a single apartment, within the narrow timeframe suggested by the title. The cast is similarly compact: just your character, his wife, and the intruder who bursts into their lives a few minutes into the game, claiming to be working for the police and accusing the wife of murder. People. Crowds of them, walking up escalators, flowing around giant blocks, climbing up walls, falling from platforms. Then fighting: thousands of figures forming battle lines, shooting into opposing masses. And then some form of ascent, as a stream of figures walks into a thin strip of blinding light. The trailer for Humanity (pictured), first shown at E3 2019, holds in today’s Covidlaced world a kind of strangeness – so many people, so close to each other – but that only amplifies its power. Its surreal representation of, well, humanity sits squarely in the uncanny as crowds flow together at such scale in stark environments, counterpointed by the plain details of their casual clothes and the brutal simplicity of their violence. Developer Housemarque Publisher SIE Format PS5 Origin Finland Release March 19 Few developers make things explode as spectacularly as Housemarque, and the Finnish studio has form for this on PlayStation. The fizzy pyrotechnics of Super Stardust HD lit up PS3, while the cascading voxels of Resogun gave PS4 an opening-day indie showcase that didn’t look out of place next to the expensive blockbusters. And if we’re generous enough to class four months as a launch window, it’s no doubt hoping Returnal will do similar for PS5 (though the studio has grown since the PS3 days, and it’s now making a game with triple-A looks and a price tag to match). Developer/publisher Scavengers Studio Format PC, PS5 Origin Canada Release TBA Amid the marketing maelstrom of December’s Game Awards, the Season announcement trailer was a halcyon moment. That twinkling Studio Ghibli piano. The wide-open watercolour sky, clouds sketched in with visible brushstrokes. Sketchbooks and tape recorders and the shifting focus of a camera viewfinder as it’s trained on a twitching lemur. It’s a bewitching minute, dense with images that demand careful study and, ideally, framing on a wall. But the game itself remains enigmatic, by design.
