Delay effect for sound designers from FabFilter The feedback specialist Timeless 3 from FabFilter, not only appears with a new design, but some exciting features have also been improved and added. This effect plug-in is not intended for classic mixdown, but also for creative sound design. In addition to the already existing analog delay, up to six filters can now be used in the delay. Up to 16 delay taps can be created, leading to inspiring rhythmic patterns. The taps can also be modulated, so that the destinations and sources of the modulation can be visualized. Conveniently, drag and drop connections between sources and destinations can be made in the 50-slot matrix. In addition, delays can now be set to ping-pong back and forth. Other innovations include distortion, lo-fi character, and…

The Crisis This Time Is Affordability

The pandemic housing boom is coming to an abrupt halt. Buyers are getting priced out by mortgage rates that have almost doubled since January. Sales of new US homes fell for the fifth time this year in June to a more than two-year low. And brokers and mortgage companies have started laying off employees by the hundreds. Unlike the exploding home price bubble that triggered the 2008 financial crisis and left millions of foreclosed properties in its wake, this is an affordability crisis. The biggest risk to the economy now is a deep and prolonged sales slump that could give the $4 trillion industry a starring role once again in the next economic recession. The Federal Reserve’s campaign to fight inflation by raising interest rates is having its intended effect of cooling…

Frank & Me

In the final years of his life, there was no one closer to Frank Sinatra than Tony Oppedisano. From the time the Brooklyn-born jazz musician met the legendary entertainer at Jilly’s, Sinatra’s favorite Manhattan nightclub, in 1972, “it was like we’d known each other for years,” Oppedisano says. They bonded over their shared Italian roots, love of the American songbook and the value they both placed on loyalty, and when that first night ended—at 6 the next morning—Oppedisano says, “I knew my life would never be the same.” ‘HE COULD MESMERIZE A ROOM JUST BY WALKING THROUGH THE DOOR’ “Tony O” became Sinatra’s road manager and eventually his close confidant. Over long evenings at the singer’s beloved Palm Springs compound, the man known as the Voice revealed secrets he’d long held close,…

AS SHE CELEBRATES HER 40TH BIRTHDAY THE DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE CHANNELS HER INNER SUPERMODEL IN THREE STUNNING AND REGAL NEW PORTRAITS

Gazing confidently straight at the camera, this is the Duchess of Cambridge as we’ve never seen her before. Kate looks every inch the high-fashion model, wearing a red one-shouldered gown, her hands in the pockets and her hair loose and wavy, lifted by the breeze to reveal diamond earrings on loan from the Queen. Taken at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew last November, the striking portrait is one of three breathtaking images by acclaimed photographer Paolo Roversi to mark the Duchess’s 40th birthday last Sunday. In each, Kate radiates an ethereal beauty in an exquisite gown by Alexander McQueen, the label behind her wedding dress. PICTURE PERFECT In the first of the other two portraits, which are in black and white, Kate smiles into the camera, wearing a floaty, ruffled white gown created from…

LETTER OF THE MONTH!

WINDOWS ON M1 I have been using MacBooks since 2012 but still use Windows for certain apps. I have a MacBook Pro 16in (Intel) and I was running Windows 10 Pro under Parallels on a 2012 Mac mini (also Intel). When my computer died, I bought a new M1 Mac mini. I had the original hard disk, except for the OS, copied to the new drives, so it had on it the original Parallels and Windows 10 Pro. I also have a subscription to Parallels, so I knew it would be the latest (ARM-compatible) version, but Windows 10 was not, and I got a warning when I tried to run it. I bit the bullet and erased Windows 10 from my new Mac. Then Parallels invited me to download Windows 11 Home (ARM…

First Test: 2022 Porsche 911 GT3 Touring

We don’t blame you if you think to yourself, “Here we go again; MotorTrend is about to laud yet another 911 GT3.” We also won’t apologize, because few cars deserve the consistency of praise given to the latest 911 GT3 range, from the standard GT3 that won our 2022 Performance Vehicle of the Year award to the next-level-and-then-some GT3 RS we drove for the first time recently (January 2023). Now we’ve taken a 2022 911 GT3 Touring with a manual transmission to our testing grounds to see how the “least extreme” version gets on with its job. The wing delete is the only significant performance-altering change between the GT3 and GT3 Touring models, thanks to the aerodynamic downforce lost by replacing the large, fixed version with an active rear spoiler and…

You Don’t Need Millions to Get Started in NFTs

When the Paper Cats project launches, it should be a continually affordable non-fungible token (NFT) avatar. The goal is to attract first-time NFT buyers by keeping the price under $10 with an infinite number of cat drawings so anyone can buy in and learn about the technology in a non-intimidating way, complete with a comic book-style walkthrough. Other successful NFT projects, like Cool Cats, may have an inviting and fun art style, but with the current buy-in price above $10,000, it’s inaccessible for those on a budget. “For cryptocurrencies to have mass adoption I believe there needs to be an easier way for people to wrap their head around all the complexities,” said a Paper Cats and Cool Cats developer who goes by the name xtremetom. “NFTs have the power to present…

WHEN people talk about Bob Dylan’s ‘born again period’, they can miss the point. If there was a determining spiritual rebirth, it didn’t happen in the late 1970s, but two decades earlier, when the Hibbing kid with a headful of Hank Williams and Little Richard vowed to dedicate himself to song. It became a never-ending baptism; he immersed himself in that river and never emerged, just swam deeper. Speaking to Newsweek around the time of 1997’s Time Out Of Mind, Dylan was unambiguous: “Here’s the thing with me and the religious thing: I find the religiosity and philosophy in the music. I don’t find it anywhere else.” He reiterated to The New York Times: “Those old songs are my lexicon and my prayer book… You can find all my philosophy in…

Cathy Poshusta has a thing for old houses. During the first decade of their marriage, she and her husband, Garrett, bought, lived in, and renovated five homes in Seattle, lovingly transforming them with their own hands. But in the summer of 2016, when she walked up the crumbling path of a worn-down farmhouse in the countryside outside Ellensburg, WA—a ranch town where she and Garrett both grew up—she experienced property lust on a different level. “I thought, I don’t just want to live in this house; I want to die in this house,” she says. “I fall in love with houses all the time, but with this one I had this great feeling I had never had before.” Looking at the place today, it’s not hard to see the appeal. With…

ENERGY: A STATUS REPORT

ENERGY: A STATUS REPORT

HOW IS ENERGY USE CHANGING? To limit global warming to a nominally safe level of 1.5˚C as laid out in the 2015 Paris climate agreement, we must replace fossil fuels with practically inexhaustible, clean, renewable alternatives, primarily derived from sun, wind and water. The aim is to hit net-zero carbon emissions – pumping no more carbon dioxide into the Earth system than it can absorb – by mid-century. A lot of changes will be needed before we get there. Our demand for energy is still rising year-on-year. Discounting the burning of traditional biomass such as wood, fossil fuels cover almost 85 per cent of “primary” energy demand, namely energy in its raw form, before conversion into heat, electricity or transport fuels. Of the big three fossil fuels – coal, oil and gas…

“NEVER GIVE UP. NEVER QUIT.”

I’M FROM a very small town in Michigan. After high school, I played football at a community college, but I realized I was only there to play football. I wasn’t doing well in class. I moved back home and realized I didn’t want to be back home, either. I went to talk with a recruiting station, and within two weeks I was shipped out to basic training. I deployed to Afghanistan in 2007 with the 82nd Airborne Division. I deployed again in 2009. When I returned home after my second deployment, my wife, Kelsey, and I bought a house, and we found out we were going to have a baby. My daughter, Chloe, was born in September 2011. I deployed for my third time to Afghanistan early the next year. One…

In my country, Ukraine, we start going out early, usually. There was no age restriction, so at the tender age of 12 you could find me in a club 7 days a week, pretty much. It was my paradise. India Chops Away At Internet Freedom

Sandeep Ravindranath, an Indian filmmaker, posted his latest work to YouTube in May. The video, a nine-minute fictional drama with no dialogue titled Anthem for Kashmir, depicts a young political activist on the lam from authorities. Indian viewers likely picked up on its numerous references to alleged extrajudicial murders in the heavily militarized province, which India and Pakistan have contested for decades. In late June, YouTube sent Ravindranath a note saying a government entity had complained about the film. The details of the government notice were confidential, it said, but the company was taking Anthem for Kashmir offline in the country. The filmmaker wasn’t surprised. “People have been thrown into prison for just Facebook posts,” he says. “It’s been gradual descent into—for lack of a better word, people have been calling…

Switch between applications

There are lots of different ways to move between open applications in macOS, depending on how you like to work. You can move the mouse pointer down to the Dock and select the application you want from there. But let’s face it, even if you’re a demon with a mouse or trackpad, it’s kinda slow. If you tend to work with applications in full-screen mode, you could tap the Mission Control key on your keyboard, or invoke it with a three-fingered swipe over the trackpad and choose the application from there. You could even fire up Spotlight, start typing the application’s name and select it when it appears in the results. But if you really want the fastest way to move between applications, there’s only one option: the App Switcher. This…

AS WE SEE IT

60 Years! It was September 1962. In the UK, the Beatles were recording their first single, “Love Me Do,” at London’s Abbey Road Studios. And in the US, a young journalist, J. Gordon Holt, born in North Carolina but raised in Australia from 1935 to 1947, had become dissatisfied with the advertiser-friendly atmosphere at High Fidelity magazine, for which he had been the audio editor. Holt quit High Fidelity and published the first issue of what was then called The Stereophile. Cover-dated September 1962, its 20 pages contained one equipment report (with four graphs), five record reviews, five feature articles, one classified advertisement, and an editorial leader1 in which JGH, as he was to become known, wrote: “The Stereophile isn’t a showcase for advertisers. It is the readers’ own publication. ……

Microsoft Windows 11: A Radically Modernized Design

Many people thought there would never be a Windows 11—understandably, after Microsoft announced in 2015 that Windows 10 would be the operating system’s last version number. New competition from Chrome OS likely made the case for a more significant interface update, though, and Windows 11 borrows heavily from Google’s lightweight desktop design. Despite its drastically new look, Windows 11 remains nearly functionally identical to Windows 10, with some new features and conveniences added. After six years of ho-hum upgrades, a major overhaul to the world’s most popular desktop operating system is welcome news: Windows fans finally have something to get excited about. PROS: Beautiful, more consistent new design. Great window layout options. New video game options. Better multi-monitor functionality. New performance-improving features. Planned support for Android apps. CONS: Requires a recent CPU.…

This week I got to drive a couple of game-changers: GM’s new all-electric Hummer and the new Mercedes-Benz EQS. Let’s start with the Hummer. When first introduced in 1992 it was big, loud and intimidating. In fact, the very first one off the assembly line was bought by none other than Arnold Schwarzenegger, who loved it and drove it everywhere, even to his movie premieres. I remember joking with him about it when he appeared on my TV show. Once Arnold became Governor of California, the Hummer faded into the background. Consumer groups clamoured for more fuel-efficient vehicles and environmentalists made it the poster-boy for bad behaviour. By February 2010, General Motors had had enough and pulled the plug. Now it’s back. One thing about Americans is we don’t change our habits, we…

PROS Stellar standard hybrid powertrain • Affordable but doesn’t punish you for it • Textbook example of how to do “cheap” interiors CONS No AWD available on the hybrid • Optional 2.0-liter engine isn’t as good as the hybrid • Exterior styling a bit plain It’s been a long time since Americans have been able to buy a new compact pickup truck, but as the 2022 Ford Maverick proves, it’s not the size of your truck that matters, but rather how you use it. At first glance, the Maverick probably wouldn’t have the makings of a Truck of the Year finalist. Instead of, ahem, “traditional” body-on-frame construction, a big V-8 engine, and four-wheel drive, the Maverick is a unibody crossover-based pickup. It’s built on the platform Ford uses for the Escape and Bronco…

Dropbox vs. Google Drive: Which cloud storage is right for you?

Dropbox vs. Google Drive: Which cloud storage is right for you?

Google’s Drive and Dropbox are two of the most popular options for cloud storage and backup. Which makes sense, because the two platforms compete with each other intensely. Which one is right for you? That’s a complex question, and it comes down to several factors: your budget, your total backup needs, and which platforms you want to use them on. Unsurprisingly, Google Drive works best if you’re heavily invested in Google’s other systems: Android, Chrome OS, and the Google Workspace suite of web apps. It’s also a better value in general. Dropbox is a better choice if you’re more concerned with speed and performance, and you’re willing to pay for it. PRICING At the consumer level, both companies offer at least one approximately comparable plan for cloud storage. In the table below we…

Cate Le Bon COME ON THEN, CARMARTHEN What music are you currently grooving to? Music For Saxofone & Bass Guitar – Sam Gendel and Sam Wilkes. Also Charlotte Adigéry, Standing On The Corner, and I’m currently having my first love affair with Tears For Fears. What, if push comes to shove, is your all-time favourite album? Faust IV by a country mile. I can remember exactly where I was and how I felt when I first heard it. Those feelings have only blossomed over the years and it’s a record I will always reference, whether it’s a feel or a specific sound I’m chasing. The real take away for me is that the abandonment employed is inspired rather than calculated. It’s a visceral exploration of sound and songwriting. What was the first record you ever bought?…

Buyers swoop for Bordeaux back-vintages Bordeaux 2020 en primeur may have generated a few sparks, but recent trading highlights also reveal market interest in back-vintages. As previously reported, some merchants have highlighted renewed momentum for Bordeaux in the past year. ‘It’s a strong market,’…

Another Side of ‘Let It Be’

Another Side of ‘Let It Be’

OF ALL the Beatles’ albums, Let It Be is the one with the most daunting reputation. We’re all used to hearing it as their breakup album. The one where the Fabs fall apart. The one they began as a back-to-basics rebirth, until it became their tombstone. But that’s never been the whole story. This is also the album with classics like “Let It Be,” “Across the Universe,” “Get Back,” and “Two of Us.” How did John, Paul, George, and Ringo make such uplifting music in their hour of darkness? “It’s an album of conflict,” says producer Giles Martin (son of the late George Martin). “It’s the most creatively conflicted album the Beatles made, because they aren’t quite sure what they’re making.” This special edition of Let It Be, out October 15th, features…

EVERYMAN’S HOT ROD

As a preface to this narrative, let’s travel back to 2002 when then-Editor David Freiburger took on the task of eulogizing his mentor, Gray Baskerville, vis-a-vis a feature on his car. In many ways in our world, a person and his car are often one in the same. Our cars are a physical manifestation of our personalities, personas, aspirations, skills, and abilities. What we do with them is also representative. Gray’s car was his daily driver. It went on the very first HOT ROD Power Tour. It made dozens of trips to the Bonneville Salt Flats and California’s dry lakebeds. From about 1966 until Gray’s death in 2002, the car was not only synonymous with Gray, but it was also synonymous with HOT ROD itself. It went on the very first…

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 (2021): A Superlative Aspirational System

We won’t try to keep you in suspense. When we reviewed last year’s model, we called the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon the best laptop in the world—though we later decided it shared that title with the Dell XPS 13 OLED—and it hasn’t done anything in its latest revision to change that state of affairs. The X1 Carbon Gen 9 catches up with the Dell and other elite ultraportables by moving to an 11th Generation Intel “Tiger Lake” Core processor and a slightly taller 16:10 rather than 16:9 screen aspect ratio. Its premium price and lack of an SD card slot still knock half a star off what would otherwise be a perfect five-star rating, but it effortlessly collects yet another Editors’ Choice award as the most desirable executive notebook on…

Comparison: 2023 Aston Martin DBX707 vs. 2022 Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT

For about two years, we could easily say Lamborghini’s Urus was the world’s best-driving super-SUV. There really wasn’t any competition. With around 100 more horsepower than the Porsche Cayenne Turbo, plus shockingly great on- and off-road performance, the Urus was the king of high-performance SUVs. Then three things happened. First, Porsche launched the Cayenne Turbo GT. It’s not a real “GT division” car because it wasn’t fully developed by Porsche’s crack Weissach-based motorsports team. But it does have an ever so slightly different version of the Urus’ 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8, which was in fact developed by the Weissach folks. Confusing, we know. And this Cayenne can boogie, so much so that it still holds the Nürburgring SUV lap record of 7 minutes, 38.9 seconds. Next came the also unbelievably great-to-drive Aston Martin DBX707,…

After ‘Rocket Lake,’ 5 Things Intel Must Do on Desktop to Get Its CPU Magic Back

We’re not keen on kicking a company while it’s down, so we’ll avoid the same introduction you’ve read a few dozen times already in the last couple of years: AMD and its Ryzen lineup is running loops around Intel and its desktop Core CPUs. And Intel keeps shooting itself in the sneaker, right when you think it might be about to get back into the race. The company’s latest launch of processors, the 11th Generation “Rocket Lake” Core series, has been met with mostly ho-hum reviews (ours among them). At a time when Intel needed to really make the Empire State Building disappear, the mirror broke, and everyone saw through the illusion. So now that the dust of the Rocket Lake launch is settling, and the verdict is firming up on 11th…

CAPTURING the COSMOS

CAPTURING the COSMOS

MOST NOVICE ASTROPHOTOGRAPHERS have a defining moment, when they find themselves staring in disbelief at what they just recorded in their camera. For me, that moment came a decade ago, standing outside on my back patio with a new Canon Rebel T1i DSLR. Although dark skies will reveal the Andromeda Galaxy to the unaided eye, suburban light pollution had forced me to clumsily determine its location using star charts. Targeting our galactic neighbor as well as I could, I simply took a string of exposures with a basic camera lens. The setup was crude, at best. And the results were even more unsophisticated (see the image above). Still, that singular view on the back of my camera proved to me that astrophotography was something I could do from my own backyard. I…

Primed for a Budget Fight

When economies stall, as they’re threatening to do almost everywhere, politicians typically inject some fiscal support to turn things around. This time it’s going to be complicated. The pandemic has left governments in the developed world with bigger deficits and debts. But there’s a more pressing problem: high inflation. Covid spending helped cause it, many economists reckon. And with supply chains still snarled, the standard recession-fighting measure of putting more cash into consumers’ pockets risks adding to the already intense price pressures. That’s the backdrop to the budget fights heating up in many countries, which have already claimed one high-profile casualty in Italy. Mario Draghi’s government collapsed on July 21 after his coalition allies withdrew their support, saying a proposed aid package for households and businesses struggling with record energy bills wasn’t…

Most mornings he gets up around 5:30 and finds a peaceful spot in his Beverly Hills home. “I go into yoga position, close my eyes,” he says, “and just take off for a minute.” He can be forgiven for needing a minute. It’s been more than two decades since Ricky Martin arrived, Venus in leather pants on a clamshell. He shook up the American pop establishment with a thrust of his hips and the invincible chorus of “Livin’ la Vida Loca” pulsing at 180 beats per minute. Women wanted him. Men wanted him. Madonna wanted him. (They recorded a duet…

RINGING IN A SPARKLING NEW YEAR BRIDES-TO-BE TRISHA GODDARD AND THE OTHER WEDDING BELLES CELEBRATING THEIR HOLIDAY ENGAGEMENTS

For some loved-up celebrities, there was double the reason to celebrate as 2022 got underway. Singer Rebecca Ferguson and actress and former Strictly Come Dancing finalist Georgia May Foote were among the famous faces ringing in the new year with engagement announcements. Georgia, 30, posted her happy news to Instagram, sharing a photograph of her and fiancé Kris Evans on holiday in Gran Canaria in front of a glorious sunset. “Mrs Evans to be,” wrote the former Coronation Street star, her gleaming five-diamond engagement ring out-dazzled only by her smile. “Of course I am still crying. @krisevansmusic I love you beyond words and I am honoured you have chosen me.” Georgia started dating the musician in 2018 and quickly knew he was The One. “He’s very chilled and very supportive and if it was…

DESTINATION MEDELLIN

DESTINATION MEDELLIN

I write this as my phone pops up memories from a year ago: beautiful cumulus clouds; a wide flat valley full of sugarcane; wings in every direction and smiles all round on the ground. Last year I was lucky enough to spend five weeks flying in Colombia’s Valle del Cauca, visiting the big-ticket sites as well as a few hidden gems. For those who live outside Colombia the easiest way to get to the Cauca Valley is to fly to either Medellin or Cali, two cities that rather neatly bound the most commonly flown areas of the valley. The distance between them is about 400km, Cali in the south, Medellin in the north, and my plan was to fly for two weeks at the popular south end of the valley, before…

THE FOUR-STAR GENERAL

THE FOUR-STAR GENERAL

GENERAL CHARLES Q. BROWN JR., 58, grips his dumbbells tightly, never taking his eyes off the timer beside him. It beeps once, and he battles through 40 seconds of squats. After a 20-second rest, another beep pushes him into reverse lunges, and now he’s panting hard. That doesn’t stop him from grabbing the dumbbells again, pulling them to his thighs just slightly, and then curling the weights and pressing them overhead on the third beep. Sure, he’s gassed, but today’s workout calls for tight 40-seconds-on, 20-off in-tervals. And the Air Force’s chief of staff never deviates from his plan. “To me, it’s cheating if I take more rest,” he says during one breather. “I try to stay as close as I can to whatever it says on my timer.” The general loves…

Labor Is Coming For Detroit

Labor Is Coming For Detroit

Inflation and the Great Resignation have forced Amazon, Apple, and other major employers to raise wages in the past year. But for Detroit’s automakers, the bill likely won’t come due until 2023. That’s when General Motors, Ford Motor, and Stellantis (née Chrysler) will sit down with the United Auto Workers to hammer out a new four-year labor contract for 150,000 employees. When they last came to the table, in 2019, GM workers went on a 40-day strike that cost the company about $2.9 billion in lost earnings. The hot-button issues then were the use of temporary employees and a two-tier wage scale. Now rising prices are eroding wages at a time when automakers have enjoyed lush profits from record-high car prices fueled by vehicle shortages. That’s giving the UAW added leverage…

The horsepower war is over. The handling war is on. Cars like the Audi RS 5 Coupe and Sportback with the Competition Plus package and Porsche’s stunning new GT3 RS—vehicles we’ve driven in just the past few months—suggest a paradigm shift is coming in the performance car business. In an era when modern EV technology means pretty much anyone can build a 2,000-horsepower car that will launch so hard it’ll shred your intestines on the way to an insanely quick 0–60 time, developing internal combustion engines that pump out ever more power to deliver marginal improvements in acceleration times and top speed is increasingly a zero-sum game. But building a road car chassis with hardware and software that allow enthusiastic and engaged drivers to be whole seconds faster around a racetrack than…

THE BUTTERMERE BASH

“Beside a lake, beneath mountains high, we party and fly!” After rounding a corner on a narrow road, I suddenly saw it. A row of rippling flags that marked the track onto the lake-side field that was to become home to around 900 “Basherites” for the next three days. The Buttermere Bash, a long weekend free-flight festival held in England’s beautiful Lake District in May each year celebrated its 15th anniversary this year, and I went along for the ride. Searching for a pitch amongst the wall-to-wall tents and camper vans I realised many had arrived days before. But they were happy to help out, and soon I had a camping pitch with “one of the best views in Britain”. The main event field has camping pitches on three sides with the lake…

Indeed, OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei is in charge here, and there’s a definite parallel between the launch strategy that put OnePlus on the map and the trickle-down reveal that preceded the Nothing Phone (1). But while OnePlus’ emergence essentially kickstarted the mid-range, Nothing enters a market already full of excellent £400 phones. Thus it does something different. The specs aren’t altogether bad, but like the striking Nothing Ear(1) true wireless buds before it and unlike just about every other generic middleground Android handset, this is a phone built with design first. Jeff is one of the most respected players in the world, who was a founding member of Steely Dan and a session ace with a list of credits any player would envy. Indeed, his solos on tracks such as Steely Dan’s Bodhisattva and My Old School gave the band a reputation for hot playing. France readies a Li-Fi line for last-meters internet connectivity Ever heard of Li-Fi? I hadn’t, nor had several future-looking car-nerd pals I mentioned it to. But the tech is coming soon to phones, tablets, and infrastructure, so savvy auto companies are integrating it into their next-generation products now. Li-Fi stands for Light Fidelity and is to Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) as lidar is to radar. That is, Li-Fi uses light to do what Wi-Fi uses radio waves to do: provide “last meters” over-the-air delivery of internet service from a router to a user’s computer, handheld device, or other internet-connected gizmo. There are many benefits and a few drawbacks. Data transmission is speed-of-light speedy, so the time it takes for messages to go back and forth (latency) is vastly lower than with Wi-Fi (0.5 millisecond…

Get a Bead on It

Creamy, lacy, silky, plush, crunchy, crisp, chalky, finely detailed, refined. This is either part of a very wordy tasting note or a list of adjectives I use regularly in my sparkling wine notes, usually to describe the mousse, or bead, of the wine—its bubbles. These descriptors help me convey what I deem an essential part of tasting and enjoying sparkling wines: the actual texture and character of a wine’s effervescence—how they feel on your palate and how they deliver the wine’s flavor range. It’s winespeak that’s pretty much exclusive to sparklers, though it’s comparable to the perception and description of a red wine’s tannins and the role they play in the enjoyment of that bottling. Not all bubbles are created equal. Think about the basic bubbles found in a can of Coca-Cola,…

Veteran Tom de Dorlodot is now training for his eighth X-Alps and has just finished an intensive programme at the Red Bull Athlete Performance Centre (APC), where he was preparing both his body – and his mind – for everything the world’s toughest adventure race will throw at him. “The Athlete Performance Centre is a bit of a secret,” Tom says. “They don’t make too much noise about it. On the Lookout for Black Swans

An increasingly popular sales pitch on Wall Street goes like this: If you’ve insured your home against some disaster, shouldn’t you do the same for your investment portfolio? In the case of a house or apartment, the danger would be fire, flooding, or perhaps a devastating storm. In the financial markets, it might be a spike in volatility and a rapid decline in prices that wipes out months or years of gains. For investors of all stripes, from the most august institution to the scrappiest day trader, the current maelstrom of sustained inflation, never-ending pandemic, war, rapidly rising interest rates, swooning tech stocks, and crypto collapse—what economic historian Adam Tooze calls a polycrisis—feels like the equivalent of a Category 5 hurricane. I never met Audio Research Corporation founder William Zane Johnson, who died in 2011. Our battle was almost lost when that shiny new warrior appeared on the north ridge. He, too, brandished a modified Stereo 70. He hailed from Minnesota, a land of extreme cold, walleye fishing, and northern lights. His company’s flag displayed a glowing vacuum tube, under which the words “High Definition” were inscribed. I felt certain he was fighting a lost cause—that we all were. I was wrong—and here we are today, celebrating William “Bill” Johnson’s achievements and the 50th anniversary of his company with a super-deluxe LP-sized hardcover…

It’s no surprise that Twitter is full of outrage over the redesign—and, it must be admitted, some praise, too. The record will show that I’ve never been a hater of new Windows features. I even found things to like in the disastrous Windows 8 release. I was an avid Cortana user, at least while she could still do useful things, such as shut down the PC or control music. But a significant difference is that, at least with Windows 8, Microsoft was creating something original and new. I know that software and all other forms of art borrow from others’ recent work, but the…

FAT FENDER RESCUE

FAT FENDER RESCUE

Although “barn find” is still a popular buzzword in the hot rod world, you’ll find that it is much more common to find an old car in a field or backyard. The unfortunate side of a field find or backyard discovery is that the car is typically not preserved as nicely as the ones that are stashed away under a roof. Such is the case with this forgotten fat-fender Ford that was recently pulled out of the weeds. This 1938 Ford Deluxe Coupe was found in the hills of Tennessee where it sat outside for most of its life, so it’s quite rough. You might notice that the paint is gone due to the abrasive cycle of sunshine, moisture, and of course, time. The climate plays a huge role in the…

1 iPHONE 13 • From £679, apple.com Apple’s four new iPhones don’t look too new – we’re in the ‘hardware refresh’ point of the iPhone cycle rather than the ‘radical redesign’ bit, after all – but they’re absolutely some of the most exciting the company has ever released. From the dinky 5.4-inch iPhone 13 mini all the way up to the big-boy 6.7-inch iPhone 13 Pro Max, with the 6.1-inch iPhones 13 and 13 Pro between them, the entire line has been given a bunch of salient upgrades. They each get new batteries with smarter power management, offering between 90 minutes to two-and-a-half hours extra life on a charge. Apple’s newest 5nm smartphone chip, the A15 Bionic, brings six CPU cores, between four and five GPU cores, and a vastly upgraded neural processor…

“It still feels like a home…. But it’s also a kind of journey,” Delevingne says. “The deeper in you go, the more treasures you discover.” Fabulous genes are not the only inheritance that supermodel and actress Cara Delevingne received from her mother, Pandora. “She used to tell us, ‘If you say you’re bored, then you are boring,’” recalls Cara, the youngest of the three Delevingne sisters. That kernel of wisdom clearly stuck—Cara Delevingne is anything but boring, as her private Los Angeles pleasure dome ably attests. The house feels like Saint-Tropez meets Coney Island meets Cotswolds cottage meets Monte Carlo meets butch leather bar. It’s a heady brew, to be sure, but Delevingne takes it all in stride. “My work requires me to put on many different hats and costumes. I love…

TRANSPORT Biggest rail strike in decades brings disruption Train passengers faced widespread disruption and cancellations as Britain’s biggest nationwide rail strike for 30 years began. Workers responsible for train lines and infrastructure across the UK walked out on Tuesday – with further action on Thursday and Saturday – leaving thousands of services cancelled and passengers forced to seek alternative means of transport. Only about 4,500 of the usual 20,000 daily services were expected to run due to the walkout by 40,000 RMT union members at Network Rail – the organisation that maintains the system – and 13 train operators. Much of Britain was without any passenger trains on the affected days. London Underground workers were also on strike on Tuesday, bringing the capital’s transport system to a halt. Last-ditch talks on Monday failed to…

Sail faster & safer downwind

The words ‘pink spinnaker’ are enough to send a chill down the spine of anyone who’s ever watched Cowes Week disaster footage. There’s Atalanta of Chester, which dis-masted when their fuchsia-coloured kite wrapped around the anchor of a tanker in August 2011. And who hasn’t seen the iconic image of Silk II as she nose-dived into the Solent in a 40-knot squall? It’s enough to put you off the big, billowy things for life. But, like it or not, as you bear away through the wind angles you need additional downwind sails to maintain good passage speeds, rather than languishing under white canvas. The good news is that in the last two decades we’ve seen huge advances in sail design and sail handling technology. Asymmetrics, code sails, snuffers, furlers and…

A Testing Time for Kenya

A Testing Time for Kenya

Kenyans head to the polls on Aug. 9 to choose a new president in a contest pitting fifth-time contender Raila Odinga against William Ruto, a challenger who’s anchored his campaign on a rags-to-riches story. It’s poised to be one of the closest elections in Kenya’s three-decade-old multiparty democracy, largely because of the involvement of outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta—the son of the country’s first president—who’s been in power for nine years. The incumbent reneged on a promise to back his 55-year-old deputy, Ruto, and has instead thrown his weight behind Odinga, a former prime minister. Odinga, 77, ran against Kenyatta in 2017 in what was a bitter election marred by violence, but the two later reconciled. Kenya’s population of 51 million includes more than 40 ethnic groupings. Divisions among some of the biggest…

Year of the Linux desktop (on Windows)

Getting an actual Linux desktop running on WSL 2.0 on Windows 11 proved a little tricky. In fairness, WSL was built to run applications, not to act like a conventional virtual machine. It’s not really surprising that Gnome and KDE won’t work. They rely on all sorts of daemons and services running in the background holding all the components together. Brave souls have managed to get the Xfce desktop working nicely on Windows 10 with Ubuntu 18.04, but this didn’t work for us on Windows 11 with Ubuntu 20.04. If you’re running Windows 10, then you’d be well advised to try out running Xfce via the X410 server. It should be a matter of and then setting the DISPLAY environment variable correctly. A major change in WSL 2 is that 127.0.0.1…

As the old Hyundai Ioniq demonstrated, building a package that suits both an internal combustion drivetrain and an electric one often results in compromises for both. SUTHERLAND ENGINEERING LITTLE LOCO MK2 PHONO STAGE Sutherland Engineering’s Ron Sutherland has been building highly respected conventional RC-type phono stages since the first settlements at Jericho. But in 2018, on the urging of a friend, he developed a current-drive/transimpedance phono stage and thought it was crazy-good, so he called it the Phono Loco. As I recall, the Phono Loco arrived to a fanfare of praise and curiosity, but it cost a lot ($8200), and a lot of audiophiles were skeptical about its unusual (but not unprecedented) current-mode operation and its need for balanced tonearm leads. This latter condition was a deal-breaker for many (including me) who struggled to comprehend the benefits of current-drive and were already invested in and satisfied with voltage-amplifying phono stages and step-up transformers. According to the Sutherland Engineering…

HOME WATERS TOUR DE MULL

HOME WATERS TOUR DE MULL

Long ago we did the Tour de Mull in open boats, in excellent weather, and I had formed the ambition to do the circumnavigation again. Which was why, on a sunny day in June, I found myself emerging in my antique ketch Dahlia from the Crinan sea lock. The canal, a tidy and delightful place nowadays, had been a sunlit interlude. Belfast coastguard, however, had begun speaking of a deep depression trundling across the north of Scotland. The surface pressure map showed isobars and fronts jammed together like a how-to diagram for basketwork, and the forecast mentioned Force 7. I therefore withdrew to a sheltered anchorage near Ardfern, and went for walks. The noise of the wind in the rigging rose from a howl to a shriek. On the third day…

For logistical reasons, I measured a different sample of the Dan D’Agostino Master Audio Systems Progression M550 monoblock (serial number PM006P) with my Audio Precision SYS2722 system (see the January 2008 “As We See It1 ”). I repeated some of the measurements with the magazine’s Audio Precision APx500 analyzer. Usefully, the box included a set of tests performed with the APx500. Before I performed the testing, I preconditioned the amplifier by running it at one-eighth its specified power into 8 ohms for 30 minutes, as recommended by the Consumer Electronics Association. After the preconditioning, the M550’s top panel was surprisingly cool, at 96.8°F (36°C). The temperature of the massive heatsinks on the amplifier’s sides was 101.8°F (38.8°C) and didn’t increase significantly with the amplifier idling. The voltage gain into 8 ohms for…

First Look: 2024 Cadillac Celestiq

Is the 2024 Cadillac Celestiq for real? This head-turning, all-electric superluxury sedan is longer than the brand’s Escalade SUV and priced in a stratosphere Cadillac has long only dreamed of returning to. To wit: Pricing will start above the $300,000 threshold, but customers can easily add up to $100,000 more via customization, all but guaranteeing no two owners have the same exact car. The mere fact Cadillac is producing the Celestiq is nearly as surprising as the vehicle itself, which fulfills a longstanding desire to build a proper flagship. An idea became a vision, then a concept car, and now a fabulous final-form four-door that brings to life almost all the gee-whiz features envisioned along the way. The Celestiq has an estimated 600 hp and 640 lb-ft of torque, a 0–60…

Soundtheory Gullfoss v1.10 Intelligent Equaliser Plug-in

Soundtheory’s Gullfoss ‘unmasking’ plug-in has been through a number of iterations and updates since our original review in 2018 and is now at version 1.10. There’s been a series of fixes and improvements with each point increment, including the important addition of Windows compatibility to the original Mac-only release. Version 1.9, however, added a side-chain input and Gullfoss Live, a low-latency edition optimised for live sound or tracking applications, and now another free update to all existing users brings us to version 1.10, with a more precise auditory perception model, new equaliser engine, and also Gullfoss Master which, whilst it still exhibits only the same 21ms latency as the standard Gullfoss, uses a bit more CPU power to offer even better audio quality and a lower noise floor, aimed at…

THE MOJO INTERVIEW

OPENING THE DOOR OF HIS WORCESTER-shire townhouse, Robert Fripp appears in black T-shirt and joggers, perspiring visibly. “You’re early, ” he cheerfully notes. “I’m just back from the gym, doing yoga and martial arts.” Before he goes off to get changed, he sets MOJO up at his kitchen table with a peppermint tea and – clearly the host with the most – a box of fruit-shaped marzipan treats. He returns 10 minutes later, characteristically dapper in a dark blue three-piece tweed suit and yellow tie. The look is capped by his grey mohawk, which he says he’s getting tidied up by a barber tomorrow. This kitchen is, of course, a now-familiar setting thanks to the weekly Sunday Lunch YouTube series shot here since lockdown, in which Fripp and his wife of nearly…

THE WORLD'S GREATEST AUTO DISRUPYORS 2022

PROGRESS IN THE AUTO industry used to just be about the cars—how they drove, what they looked like, how much they cost, how comfortable they were and how safe. Those things still matter greatly, of course, but now, the automotive landscape is far vaster. As technological advances expand the possibilities of what a car can be and new challenges—from climate change to the pandemic—present themselves, innovation in the auto world is extending into new vistas, including sustainability, mobility, alternative fuels and and a full embrace of the digital future. Cars, in other words, aren’t only vehicles anymore, getting you from Point A to Point B. They can be entertainment systems, tech centers, home offices and information hubs. They can be problem solvers, helping to address issues like carbon emission, soaring gasoline…

DCS BARTÓK DAC/HEADPHONE AMPLIFIER I finally get what those unboxing videos are all about. As I deciphered my way through the dCS Bartók’s triple boxes,1 my sense of audiophile entitlement rose as I opened each successive box. Inside the last box, the Bartók was wrapped in a black velvet drawstring pouch. That made me smile until I realized that the Bartók was so big that I had nowhere to put it. It requires a shelf at least 19" deep that can support 36.8 pounds. My desktop system shelf is only 16" from its front edge to the wall; previously, the biggest DAC/headphone amp I’ve installed there was the Mytek Manhattan II, which only needed 14" front-to-rear (including space for cables) and only weighed 16lb. On my desk, the dCS Bartók usurped 323 square…

Bowers & Wilkins PX8

Fresh from this summer’s success with the PX7 S2, Bowers & Wilkins is back with what looks like more of the same. Despite the superficial similarities, though, the PX8 are meant to be an across-the-board improvement – in every respect, from aesthetic to sonic. So can lightning strike twice? Is it a spoiler to start by saying the PX8 sound great? With any type of music, at any volume level and in any environment. They’re a deeply accomplished pair of headphones, as the asking price insists they should be. They can turn their hand to anything. A massed symphony orchestra, a sensitive singer-songwriter with just one instrument accompanying them, a laptop savant whose music has never been anywhere near an actual musical instrument, you name it… the PX8 like it all, and…

Dear Jonny Thanks, Jonny Lieberman, for a great article on the Lamborghini Countach (November). It reminded me of the first time I saw “the” Lambo in person. It was 1983 in London, on my U.K. honeymoon with my (still) lovely wife. At an intersection in Knightsbridge, I saw it. A black Countach. I had my backpack off, 35mm camera out, quick focus, and ripped off a couple of shots. Then the machina was gone. Throughout the monthlong trip I ended up with eight rolls of 36-exposure film, all secured carefully in a lead-lined bag to prevent exposure to X-rays. Arriving home, it was straight to a photo shop for developing. Then the moment of truth: Did I get the shot? Sure did—and the driver was smiling back at me, too. Oh yeah,…

MOVIE | Don’t Worry Darling Florence Pugh senses growing shadows in her sunny community THRILLER The title (which is awful) suggests an old Doris Day comedy set during the Cuban Missile Crisis, but actress Olivia Wilde’s second directing effort—after 2019’s highly praised Booksmart—is closer in spirit to one of Jordan Peele’s or M. Night Shyamalan’s stylishly nightmarish exercises in suspense. The setup, in fact, promises some kind of fresh take on the classic paranoid thriller The Stepford Wives. Alice (Florence Pugh) lives in an immaculate suburban development that has somehow sprouted out in the middle of the desert.
