Upgrading weapons has been a feature of Fortnite for some time. Upgrade benches, for example, have allowed you to boost your weapon rarity in exchange for chunk of resources. The upgrade system itself has seen a massive overhaul since Chapter 2, Season 6. Now weapons have different upgrade paths and different items are needed to upgrade those guns. The assault weapon is probably the most used category of gun in the entire game. If in doubt, reach for an assault weapon! It has strong all-round abilities and can do damage at almost any range. They normally take the medium bullets, which are incredibly easy to find lying around. WHEN TO USE THEM ■ The assault weapons are most effective at medium range. If you’re trying to tag someone on the building next to you, this is normally the type of gun to reach for. ■ Assault weapons normally have a decent fire rate and a mag size of between 20-30, which means you can unload a serious number of bullets between reloads. Shotguns are the weapon of choice for farmers and bank robbers, but they’re pretty handy in a game of Fortnite, too. They suck up the slugs ‘n shells, the little red cannisters full of shot that you should never pass up an opportunity to collect, especially in the early part of the game, as they can be hard to find. WHEN TO USE THEM ■ Shotguns are for times when the enemy is so close that you can smell what they ate for breakfast! ■ A shotgun sprays pellets – and each of those individual pellets does damage to the opponent. They normally use the very common light bullets, which is lucky, because you’re going to be chewing through the ammo like a cow chews through grass with these!
