1 UNITED STATES Affidavit in FBI Mar-a-Lago search ‘should stay sealed’ The justice department has asked a judge not to release the affidavit that gave the FBI probable cause to search Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, worsening distrust among top Trump aides casting about for any insight into the intensifying criminal investigation surrounding the former president. The affidavit should not be unsealed because it could reveal the scope of the investigation into Trump’s unauthorised retention of government secrets, the justice department argued, after the Mara-Lago search warrant showed it referenced potential violations of three criminal statutes. FBI agents a week ago seized around 20 boxes of materials, executing a search warrant that referenced the Espionage Act outlawing the unauthorised retention of national security information that could harm the United States or aid an adversary. ANIMAL SPECIES Ant that carries caterpillars is among new species identified A blind, cave-dwelling weevil, an ant that protects the caterpillars of one of Australia’s rarest butterflies, and the first millipede to have more than 1,000 legs were among 139 new species described by scientists at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in the past year. Other discoveries formally named and described in scientific journals include 131 insects and other invertebrates, four fish, three plants and a frog. About 100 of the new species the CSIRO scientists helped to describe are Australian. Most of the scientific papers involved collaborations between CSIRO and other organisations and institutions. POLITICS Labour sets out energy bill help via windfall tax plan Keir Starmer has put a beefed-up £8bn ($9.6bn) windfall tax on energy company profits at the heart of a new plan to stop people having to pay “a penny more” on fuel bills this winter. The Labour leader confirmed that under his plan the energy price cap would be frozen at the current level, meaning that an expected 80% rise in October – taking an average household bill to about £3,600 – would not go ahead. Starmer said the country was facing “a national emergency” and that Labour “wouldn’t let people pay a penny more” on energy bills as a result of his “fully funded plan”.
