1 US/AFGHANISTAN Al-Qaida leader killed in US drone attack on Kabul Joe Biden described the death of Ayman al-Zawahiri, who was Osama bin Laden’s deputy and successor, as a major blow to the terrorist network behind the September 11 2001 attacks. Announcing on Monday that a US drone strike in Afghanistan had killed the al-Qaida leader, the US president said in a live televised address: “Justice has been delivered and this terrorist leader is no more. People around the world no longer need to fear the vicious and determined killer.” The CIA strike will be seen as proof of the US’s ability to conduct “over-the-horizon” operations despite last year’s military’s withdrawal from Afghanistan. MARINE LIFE Robot probe finds dozens of unknown deep-sea species Scientists have found more than 30 potentially new species living at the bottom of the sea. Researchers from the UK’s Natural History Museum used a remotely operated vehicle to collect specimens from the abyssal plains of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone in the central Pacific. The study, published in the journal Zoo Keys, found there was a high species diversity of larger organisms in the abyss. Of the 55 specimens recovered, 48 were of different species and included segmented worms, invertebrates from the same family as centipedes, animals from the same family as jellyfish, and different types of coral.
