editor’s letter

Who doesn’t love the delicious voyeurism of our Before & After issue? Seeing how these fabulous renovations began proves how much blood, sweat, tears (and dollars) flow into these renovations – something it’s hard to imagine when you’re looking at the finished results. The way to connect with the wonder of the job is to start at the very beginning to get your head around the enormity of the transformation. Before & After issues give us time to stop, look and really appreciate how the projects on these pages have come about and, in turn, how they’ve changed the lives of those inside. I mean, I’d look as happy as our covergirl, Angela O’Connell, if that was my completed house! You can see plenty more of it on page 46…

wrong is so right Established by British designer Sebastian Wrong in 2011, The Wrong Shop bridges the gap between art and design. Starting out as a collection of unique furniture pieces, the range now includes limited-edition prints, art objects and even posters, now available from Living Edge. Our favourites are Drawing 4 (top), Drawing 6 (right) and Drawing 7 (above right) by Ronan Bouroullec, and Freddo (far right) by Nathalie Du Pasquier, all $150 and clearly great together. Add a group of neutral white ceramics and voilá! WORDS: LAURA BARRY. PHOTOGRAPHY: SAM McADAM-COOPER (BACKGROUND). STYLING: VANESSA COLYER TAY…

hegi design house

How did Hegi Design House get started? It was established in 2019 by us, Nelli and Juri Hegi – we’re a couple. We design together, and all our pieces are handmade in Gerringong, on the South Coast of NSW. Juri is largely self-taught in metal work, and our family’s hands-on approach informs our craftsmanship. While our path into the profession has been non-traditional (I’m not a professional product designer, nor is Juri a professional welder, but he is a professional joiner), our work is refined, resolved and unique. We’re all about minimalistic, honest, handmade statement designs with a focus on the beauty of the material. Explain the design ethos behind your brand We have 15 years’ experience in quality craftsmanship, and we produce beautifully handcrafted furniture. We’re dedicated to using sustainably…

magic moments

Amber Creswell Bell is an art curator and author at amber INDIA MARK What India loves about still life is how it forces her to think outside her own world, owing to the difficulty of ‘accidentally’ inserting herself into a still-life painting. Her works are uncomplicated yet highly controlled, as she enjoys the impact of simplicity. Finding herself drawn to objects that are not too detailed, India feels that plain objects hold more scope for the imagination. @baroquebae93 ANH NGUYEN Anh sees painting as a way to prolong and explore her personal visual experiences, and to record the things that interest her most. Her work is a curious examination of light and shadow, and her paintings capture a gentle, dream-like quality that is both a tangible mood and a reflection of the gentle filtered…

loewe weaves

Craft has hit the big time this year with the release of a playful artisan range by high-end Spanish bag maker Loewe. Launched in collaboration with Sotheby’s auction house and its Buy Now online marketplace, the Loewe Weaves project includes bags and bracelets as well as a series of woven and knotted vessels that started out as humble clay chestnut roasters from Galicia. Seven international artists, with a range of cultural and technical backgrounds, were asked to embellish them for a one-off auction in May. Many more were made at the company’s Madrid atelier, with leather offcuts and natural raffia worked into the roasters’ holes. “The act of weaving can take on many different meanings and forms,” says creative director Jonathan Anderson. “Our aim was to push craft to the…
