Summer is well and truly here – and whether you are at home or away, the long sunny days and balmy nights are energising and full of promise. As ever, the magazine is packed with travel inspiration, and this month we embark on our travels to Verona, the beautiful Veneto city immortalised by Shakespeare in his tale of star-crossed lovers. Whether the story of Juliet’s balcony is fact or fiction matters little, as we travel deeper to the city’s heart and its noble Roman heritage. Traditions of another kind are on our mind in Puglia; this time, the culinary variety. It’s a captivating land with its roots firmly in the soil, as you’ll discover. The restful public gardens of Florence are in the spotlight too, while this month’s Fast Culture tells…

The perfect setting for the most romantic love story of all time, this is also a city with a proud Roman heritage, an operatic tradition and excellent wines. Take a stroll around the beautiful piazzas and winding streets of the city with Sara on page 20. FLEUR KINSON Liguria’s international property market first got going in the 19th century and its attributes of stunning coastline and steep maritime alps rising behind them continue to attract buyers today. It’s easy to reach and still offers good value for money, especially in the hinterland. Read our expert’s assessment on page 84. CHRISTINE SMALLWOOD is a food…

five reasons to visit italy’s best beaches

1 For the picture-perfect paradise beach, Sardinia’s Spiaggia della Pelosa ticks all the boxes. But of course, perfection comes at a price, and for beaches this tends to mean you’ll be packed onto those heavenly sands with a thousand other people come highseason. In August you’ll most likely find traffic jams en route, and you’ll have to arrive early to reserve your place. That said, even the crowds can’t detract from the magic of Pelosa’s scenery and the electric hues that dazzle the eyes on a sunny day. 2 The Calle delle Arene is located on San Domino, the largest island of the stunning Puglia archipelago of the Isole Tremiti. We would be happy on any of the many beaches and coves of these islands, but this sandy stretch amid magical…

this month news & views

Island shopping If you’ve ever dreamed of a new life in Italy, we may just have the ultimate opportunity to live that dream: a private island off the coast of Sicily is on sale with Christie’s International Real Estate – and it could be all yours for the bargain price of €1 million. The 37-acre Isola delle Femmine (literally ‘Island of the Females’) is just 300 metres off the coast. It’s part of a protected marine park that abounds with unrivalled snorkelling and scuba opportunities, while the island’s sun-drenched scenery is as pretty as a picture. There is one catch to the deal, however. The only building on the land is a crumbling 17th-century stone tower. Considerable investment is needed to make the structure habitable so you will need to take…

going up, going down…

GOING UP • Looking for somewhere to pop the question? It will come as no surprise to Italy fans that one of the country’s romantic destinations has topped a poll on the best places in the world to propose. Venice took the top spot in the survey carried out by dating site EliteSingles. The city beat Paris and Hawaii, which were the second and third choices. • And while we’re on the subject of Italy topping polls, it’s worth mentioning that two Italian rail routes have been named the most instagrammable train journeys in the world. A Canvas Holidays survey saw the iconic Venice Simplon-Orient-Express come in at number 1 and the ever-photogenic Bernina Express (from Cher in Switzerland to Italy’s Tirano) take second place. GOING DOWN • Rome has been enforcing its…
